12-Year-Old Walks More Than 500km to Help Children in Rural Australia
A Long Walk for a Bigger Cause
A 12-year-old boy has completed a journey of more than 500 kilometres across New South Wales to raise awareness and support for children living in rural and remote communities.
Dusty Langby and his mother, Sarah, walked from the town of Warren in north-western New South Wales to Canberra. The journey was organised to raise money for Little Wings, a charity that helps seriously ill children and their families access medical care.
Hundreds of Kilometres on Foot
The journey covered more than 540 kilometres, requiring Dusty and his mother to spend many days on the road. Nurses Christine Letton and Nichole Callan also joined parts of the journey on foot.
The walk highlighted the difficulties faced by families living far from major medical centres. For children in rural areas, getting specialist treatment can involve long journeys that place additional pressure on families already dealing with serious illness.

Helping Families Reach Medical Care
Little Wings provides free flights and transport for seriously ill children and their families who need to travel from regional and remote areas for medical treatment.
For families living hundreds of kilometres from specialist hospitals, this support can make an important difference. It can reduce the cost and difficulty of travelling while allowing parents to stay close to their children during treatment.
A Journey That Drew Attention
After completing the long walk, Dusty and his mother travelled to Canberra, where they met medical workers and other supporters of the cause.
The journey also attracted public attention because of Dusty’s young age and the distance he was willing to walk for other children. What began as a personal challenge became a way to draw attention to an issue affecting families across rural Australia.
One Young Person Making a Difference
Dusty’s journey shows how a simple idea can become a meaningful community effort. Walking more than 500 kilometres required commitment, but the purpose behind the journey gave each step a wider meaning.
For families who live far from specialist medical services, better access to transport can be life-changing. Dusty and his supporters hope their journey will encourage more people to understand the challenges faced by children growing up in remote communities.
