A 13-year-old boy is being remembered for his courage after he was fatally shot while trying to protect his 3-year-old sister during a shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Sha’michal Russell was playing outside with his younger sister near the basketball court at the Olde Salem Village apartment complex on September 28, 2026, when gunfire erupted. According to his family, the teenager used his own body to shield the toddler from the bullets.
His aunt, Jessica Haley, a chaplain with the Shreveport Police Department, described him as a loving and selfless boy who cared deeply about the people around him. She said he loved sports, gospel music and making others laugh, and was always willing to help neighbors.
The shooting also left a 17-year-old and a 2-year-old injured, according to police. The tragedy has devastated the family and community, who are mourning a young life cut short while remembering the actions his relatives described as an attempt to save his little sister.
Sha’michal’s courage has also received national recognition. The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation announced that he would receive its Youth Heroism Award posthumously, making him the first teenager to receive the award after death, according to the report.

Two men, Javieon Abbott and Alonzo Abbott, were arrested in connection with the shooting and faced charges related to the death and injuries. Police said the investigation remained ongoing and that additional developments were possible.
For Sha’michal’s family, his legacy is not defined only by the tragedy, but also by the kindness they say he showed throughout his life and the love he had for his little sister.
