15-Year-Old Boy Praised After Helping Others Escape Cinema Fire in New Zealand

A 15-year-old boy in Auckland has been recognised for helping protect others after a fire broke out at a cinema where he was preparing for a church service.

Teen Notices Smoke Inside Cinema

Levi Savusa was inside Hoyts Botany in east Auckland when he became aware of smoke during a Sunday church gathering.

Rather than waiting for someone else to respond, Levi alerted cinema staff and encouraged them to contact emergency services.

He also realised that a children’s church group was gathered in another cinema and might not know about the danger. He made sure the group was warned promptly.

Helping During the Evacuation

Levi remained calm while the situation developed. According to his family, he helped gather essential equipment where possible and documented what was happening with photographs.

He also communicated with emergency responders, church leaders and cinema staff when they arrived, providing information that could help with the evacuation.

At one point, Levi noticed a woman arriving at Botany Town Centre who appeared unaware of the incident. He stopped her and explained what was happening so she would not unknowingly enter an affected area.

Recognised as a Community Hero

Levi’s actions were later highlighted by the local Times newspaper as part of its Community Hero Award, which recognises people who help others in the east Auckland community.

His mother, Michelle Savusa, nominated him for the recognition, describing how he remained focused and considerate while helping others during the emergency.

For Levi’s family, the incident was an example of how a young person can make a difference by staying alert and communicating quickly when something goes wrong.

A Young Response to an Emergency

The incident also highlights the importance of recognising potential danger early. By alerting staff, warning the nearby children’s group and communicating with people around him, Levi helped others become aware of the situation and leave safely.

At just 15 years old, his response has now earned recognition from his local community.
