18-Year-Old Eli Rivera Reaches Remission in Leukemia Battle

One month ago, 18-year-old Eli Rivera was preparing to move into his college dorm in Texas and begin studying civil engineering.

Instead, a leukemia diagnosis sent him to a San Antonio hospital, where he began a fight no teenager should have to face.

Now, his family finally has some long-awaited good news.

Eli is in remission.

His uncle, Juan, recently shared an update that the family had been praying for. According to Juan, treatment has brought Eli’s acute lymphoblastic leukemia under control to the point that doctors can no longer detect the disease with their current testing.

His bone marrow is also recovering and beginning to produce normal blood cells.

And after another recent scare, the family received another encouraging update: Juan said Eli had been fever-free for 13 hours.

For a family that has spent the past month navigating hospital stays, chemotherapy and uncertainty, the news represents an important moment of hope.

But remission does not mean Eli’s treatment is finished.

He still has more chemotherapy ahead as his doctors work to keep the leukemia under control and make the remission as deep and lasting as possible.

Just weeks ago, Eli was supposed to be stepping onto the campus of Texas A&M University–Kingsville, beginning his college journey and working toward a future in civil engineering.

Instead, his plans were suddenly replaced by hospital rooms and cancer treatment.

Now, his family is beginning to imagine that future again.

Juan says the family is incredibly grateful to everyone who has prayed for Eli, offered encouragement and followed his journey since his diagnosis.

He is asking supporters not to stop now.

The leukemia may not currently be detectable, but Eli’s fight continues. More treatment lies ahead, and his family knows there can still be difficult days.

For now, though, they are allowing themselves to celebrate one important milestone.

Eli has reached remission.

It may not be the end of his journey, but for an 18-year-old who was supposed to be starting college, it is a powerful step toward the future he had been preparing for.

And his family is hoping that one day soon, the hospital room will be replaced by a college dorm, chemotherapy appointments by classes, and uncertainty by the life Eli had always imagined.
