He Had Hours to Decide Whether to Take in His Six-Week-Old Niece

Clive thought he was answering an ordinary phone call from children’s services. Instead, he was suddenly asked to make a decision that would change the rest of his life.

His six-week-old niece needed a family member to care for her immediately. Clive had only hours to decide whether he would take her home or risk her entering the care system.

A Decision He Had Almost No Time to Prepare For

At the time, Clive was a 32-year-old primary school headteacher focused heavily on his career. He initially assumed he would have several days to prepare after being contacted about his niece.

Instead, social workers told him the baby needed to come to him that same afternoon.

Clive had no cot, no pushchair and no experience looking after a baby. He suddenly had to prepare his home for a newborn without the months of preparation that normally come with expecting a child.

A Baby Arrived With Almost Nothing

When the social workers arrived, they brought the baby to Clive’s home in a carry cot. She had a small suitcase containing her belongings and was wrapped in a pink blanket.

Clive later recalled sitting in the house after she arrived and realising just how dramatically his life had changed. He had spent years concentrating on his career, but overnight he had become responsible for a baby who needed stability and care.

Temporary Care Became a Family

What was initially expected to be a temporary arrangement eventually became permanent.

Nine years later, Clive is Savannah’s legal guardian. She continues to have regular contact with her birth parents, while Clive remains a central figure in her life.

Although the experience has brought enormous happiness, Clive has also described periods of exhaustion and isolation. Caring for a child unexpectedly meant balancing family responsibilities with his career and adapting almost every part of his daily life.

He Was Not the Only One to Say Yes

Clive’s story is part of a much wider picture. More than 141,000 children in England and Wales are being raised by relatives or family friends who have stepped in when their parents are unable to care for them.

Other families featured in the same project faced similarly sudden decisions. Alan and Julie, for example, were given only 10 minutes to decide whether they would care for their 10-month-old granddaughter.

For many of these families, saying yes meant rearranging homes, jobs, finances and long-term plans almost overnight.

A Decision That Changed What Success Meant

Clive once considered his career achievements among the most important accomplishments of his life. Becoming a headteacher at a young age was something he was proud of.

But years later, he sees his decision to keep his niece within the family differently. For him, helping Savannah remain surrounded by people who love her means more than any professional award.

His story shows how a single decision, made under extraordinary pressure, can reshape an entire life. What began as an unexpected phone call became a nine-year journey of family, responsibility and love.
