THEY HUMILIATED HER AT THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY—UNTIL HE STOOD UP FOR HER
Chapter 1 — The Engagement Ring They Didn’t Want Her to Wear
The mansion glittered beneath hundreds of golden lights.
Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling like frozen stars, while servants moved quietly between tables covered in white roses, silverware, and champagne glasses.
Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night of Clara Bennett’s life.
She was officially becoming the future wife of Edward Harrington, the only son of one of the wealthiest families in the county.
But from the moment Clara stepped through the mansion doors, she knew something was wrong.
She wore a simple ivory dress.
It was elegant, modest, and carefully sewn by her own hands.
But compared with the jeweled gowns worn by the Harrington women, it looked almost painfully plain.
Edward had told her it was beautiful.
His mother clearly disagreed.
Lady Margaret Harrington looked Clara up and down before giving a faint smile.
“My dear,” she said, loud enough for several guests nearby to hear, “I thought you understood this was an engagement party.”
Clara forced a smile.
“I do.”

“I only meant that most women would have chosen something more… appropriate.”
A few guests exchanged amused glances.
Clara lowered her eyes.
Edward immediately stepped closer.
“Mother.”
Margaret smiled innocently.
“I’m only helping her.”
Before Edward could answer, his younger sister, Vivian, approached with two friends.
She glanced at Clara’s dress.
“Oh, I actually like it.”
Clara looked relieved.
Vivian continued.
“It reminds me of something my grandmother would have worn while working in the garden.”
Her friends laughed.
The warmth disappeared from Clara’s face.
Edward’s jaw tightened.
“That’s enough.”
But the humiliation had only begun.
At dinner, Clara was seated at the far end of the main table instead of beside Edward.
When the champagne was served, Margaret raised her glass.
“To Edward,” she announced, “and to the future of the Harrington family.”
Everyone applauded.
Then she paused.
“And, of course, to those who understand what it means to become part of a family like ours.”
Her eyes settled on Clara.
The room became strangely quiet.
Clara felt dozens of eyes on her.
She could have cried.
Instead, she reached beneath the table and closed her trembling fingers around the engagement ring.
Edward noticed.
He leaned toward her.
“Are you all right?”
She nodded.
“I’m fine.”
“No, you’re not.”
Before she could answer, the butler approached.
“Miss Bennett, Lady Harrington requests that you come with her.”
Clara looked toward Margaret.
The older woman smiled.
“I believe there are some family matters we should discuss.”
Edward immediately stood.
“I’ll come with her.”
“No.”
Margaret’s voice became cold.
“This concerns the women of the family.”
Edward hesitated.
Clara gently touched his hand.
“It’s all right.”
She followed Margaret upstairs.
She had no idea that within the next hour, the entire engagement party would learn a secret Clara had kept hidden for years.
And she had no idea that Edward would soon have to choose between his family…
and her.
