‘DEXTER’-OBSESSED STUDENT ADMITS MURDER AFTER POLICE RELEASE ARREST FOOTAGE

A British forensics student who reportedly became obsessed with the crime drama Dexter has admitted murdering a woman inside an Airbnb room he allegedly prepared to resemble a scene from the television series.

Benjamin Day, 20, pleaded guilty to murdering Maria Saceanu, a 24-year-old Romanian woman, in December 2025. He is due to be sentenced on December 4, according to British media reports.

A CRIME SCENE THAT SHOCKED INVESTIGATORS

The killing took place at a rented property in Tividale, in England’s West Midlands. Prosecutors told the court that Day had prepared a room with plastic sheeting and brought equipment including knives, gloves and cleaning supplies.

Investigators said Saceanu suffered 78 stab wounds. The case attracted particular attention because of the alleged similarities between the crime scene and Dexter, a television drama about a forensic technician who secretly commits murders.

Detective Inspector Matt Marston of West Midlands Police said Day appeared to have developed an obsessive interest in the fictional character and had planned the killing in detail.

THE STORY HE TOLD POLICE

After the attack, Day reportedly left the property and later flagged down police officers because he had injured his hand.

Newly released body-camera footage shows him telling officers that he may have been bitten by a fox. Investigators became suspicious of his explanation and began tracing his movements.

Police subsequently searched the Airbnb and discovered Saceanu’s body. Day was later arrested at a hospital, according to reports.

A GUILTY PLEA IN COURT

Day initially faced a trial but changed his plea to guilty on the second day of proceedings at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The case has raised disturbing questions about the relationship between fictional crime stories and real-world violence. However, investigators have not suggested that watching a television programme alone explains why someone commits a crime.

Day is due to return to court on December 4 for sentencing.

REMEMBERING MARIA SACEANU

As the case moves toward sentencing, Saceanu’s family has been left to cope with a devastating loss.

The killing has shocked the local community and attracted international attention, not only because of the severity of the crime but also because of the reported links to a well-known television drama.
