THE DAUGHTER-IN-LAW THE BILLIONAIRE QUEEN HATED

Chapter 1 — The Bride They Humiliated

The slap echoed through the grand ballroom.

Three hundred guests fell silent as Evelyn Carter stumbled backward, one hand pressed against her burning cheek. Crystal chandeliers glittered above her, and hundreds of curious eyes watched her humiliation.

Standing before her was Victoria Blackwood, the billionaire matriarch whose name alone could make powerful businessmen tremble.

“You think marrying my son makes you one of us?” Victoria sneered. “Look at you. Wearing a cheap dress and pretending to belong among people who built empires.”

A few guests laughed nervously.

Evelyn lowered her eyes. Her simple ivory gown was nothing like the designer dresses worn by the women surrounding her. She had never cared about wealth or status. All she had wanted was to marry the man she loved.

But tonight, her husband, Daniel Blackwood, stood beside his mother without saying a word.

“Daniel,” Evelyn whispered, searching his face. “Please tell her to stop.”

He looked away.

Victoria smiled triumphantly.

“My son deserves a woman who can strengthen this family, not a nobody who brings nothing but embarrassment. I allowed this marriage because I thought you might learn your place. Clearly, I was mistaken.”

She seized the champagne glass from a passing waiter and poured its contents over Evelyn’s dress.

Gasps filled the ballroom.

“Now you look exactly as you are,” Victoria declared. “A servant who wandered into the wrong party.”

Evelyn stood motionless as champagne dripped from her hair onto the marble floor.

For three years, she had endured Victoria’s insults. She had been called poor, useless, and unworthy. She had swallowed every cruel remark for Daniel’s sake, believing that one day his mother might accept her.

But watching Daniel remain silent, something inside her finally broke.

She slowly lifted her head.

“Are you finished, Mrs. Blackwood?”

Victoria’s smile vanished.

“What did you say?”

“I asked whether you were finished humiliating me.”

The ballroom became so quiet that Evelyn could hear the soft ticking of the antique clock above the entrance.

Victoria stepped closer, her eyes blazing.

“You insolent little girl. Do you have any idea who I am?”

“Yes,” Evelyn replied calmly. “You’re a woman who believes money gives her the right to destroy other people’s dignity.”

Several guests exchanged startled glances.

Daniel grabbed Evelyn’s wrist.

“Enough! Apologize to my mother.”

She stared at him in disbelief.

“After everything she has done, you still expect me to apologize?”

“She is my mother!”

“And I am your wife.”

For a moment, Daniel had no answer.

Evelyn gently pulled her hand free, removed the diamond wedding ring from her finger, and placed it on the nearest table.

“If standing beside me costs you your family’s approval, then perhaps you never deserved to stand beside me at all.”

Daniel’s face paled.

“Evelyn, don’t be ridiculous.”

She turned away.

Victoria laughed coldly. “Where will you go? Back to your tiny apartment? You have nothing without my son!”

Evelyn stopped at the ballroom doors.

Then she glanced over her shoulder.

“You’re right about one thing, Victoria. I haven’t shown you what I have.”

Before the billionaire could respond, Evelyn walked out.

Neither woman noticed the black limousine waiting beyond the entrance, its rear door held open by a silver-haired man in an immaculate suit.

“Miss Carter,” he greeted her with a respectful bow. “The board is assembled. Your grandfather’s final instructions have been carried out.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“Has the acquisition been completed?”

“Yes, Miss. As of nine o’clock this evening, your company holds the controlling interest in Blackwood Global.”

For the first time that night, Evelyn smiled.

Blackwood Global was the empire Victoria had spent thirty years building—the source of her fortune, her influence, and her untouchable reputation.

And now, every major decision in that empire would require the approval of the granddaughter Victoria had just called worthless.

“Prepare the announcement for tomorrow morning,” Evelyn said as she entered the limousine.

The man hesitated.

“Shall we reveal your identity as the sole heir to the Carter International Group?”

Evelyn gazed through the tinted window at the glittering hotel entrance.

“Not yet.”

Her voice was quiet, but there was steel beneath every word.

“Tomorrow, I want the entire Blackwood family in that boardroom.”

She paused.

“Let them discover who they’ve been humiliating.”

The limousine pulled away into the night.

Inside the ballroom, Victoria raised another glass of champagne, convinced she had finally driven her unwanted daughter-in-law out of the family.

She had no idea that by sunrise, the empire she worshipped would be in the hands of the woman she despised.

And when the truth came out, the most powerful woman in the room would have to answer to the very daughter-in-law she had tried to destroy.
