THE SUBSTITUTE BRIDE’S REVENGE – Part 1: The Bride They Never Wanted

THE SUBSTITUTE BRIDE’S REVENGE
Chapter 1: The Bride They Never Wanted
The night Evelyn Carter agreed to become another woman’s bride, she knew she might lose everything—including her freedom.
But she never imagined that one wedding would give her the power to destroy one of the most powerful families in the country.
“Please, Evelyn. You’re the only one who can save me.”
Her younger sister, Lily, knelt on the cold floor of their small apartment, tears streaming down her cheeks. Their father’s debts had left the family desperate, and the wealthy Blackwood family had offered to erase every dollar in exchange for Lily’s marriage to their eldest son.
Lily had never loved him. Worse, rumors claimed that Alexander Blackwood was a cold, ruthless man who treated marriage as nothing more than a business transaction.
“I can’t marry him,” Lily whispered. “I’d rather die than spend my life with someone who sees me as a possession.”
Evelyn held her sister’s trembling hands.
“Then you won’t have to.”
Lily looked up, confused. “What do you mean?”
“I’ll take your place.”
Three days later, Evelyn stood beneath a crystal chandelier in the grand Blackwood mansion, wearing a wedding gown that cost more than everything she owned.
The guests whispered as she walked down the aisle.
“That’s not the bride we were promised.”
“Look at her. She doesn’t even belong here.”
“Perhaps the Carter family was so desperate for money that they sent their other daughter instead.”
Evelyn heard every cruel word, but she kept her chin lifted.
She had not come here to win their approval.
She had come to save her sister.
At the altar stood Alexander Blackwood, a tall man with sharp features and eyes as cold as winter. His tailored black suit made him look every bit the heir to an empire built on money and power.
When Evelyn reached him, he leaned closer.
“Let me make one thing clear,” he murmured. “I never agreed to marry you. Whatever arrangement your family made, you will remain invisible in my house.”
Evelyn met his gaze without flinching.
“Then we finally agree on something. I never dreamed of marrying you either.”
For the first time, Alexander seemed genuinely surprised.
Their marriage certificate was signed beneath the watchful eyes of the Blackwood family, and the ceremony ended with polite applause and cold smiles.
But the real humiliation began at dinner.
Alexander’s mother, Victoria Blackwood, examined Evelyn from head to toe before placing her wineglass on the table.
“You may have married my son, but don’t mistake that for acceptance. A woman from your background will never be a true Blackwood.”
Evelyn calmly cut into her untouched meal.
“Fortunately, I didn’t marry your family for acceptance.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You married into this family because your father is drowning in debt. Without our money, your family would be ruined.”
Evelyn slowly put down her fork.
“Perhaps. But you should be careful when assuming that money makes someone powerless.”
A heavy silence fell over the table.
Alexander stared at his new wife as if he were seeing her for the first time.

He had expected tears, pleading, and desperate attempts to win his affection. Instead, Evelyn spoke as though she had nothing to fear.
And that irritated him more than he cared to admit.
Later that night, Evelyn entered the bedroom prepared for her and discovered a thick folder lying on the dressing table.
Her name was written across the cover.
She opened it.
Inside were copies of legal documents, financial records, and a draft agreement transferring a significant portion of Blackwood Industries’ voting shares under suspicious conditions.
Then she saw a familiar name.
Edward Carter. Her father.
Evelyn’s blood ran cold.
Her father had supposedly been ruined by bad investments. Yet these documents suggested that someone inside the Blackwood empire had deliberately engineered his financial collapse.
And her marriage was somehow connected to the plan.
Before she could examine the papers further, she heard footsteps outside the door.
She quickly slipped the folder beneath her pillow and turned toward the entrance.
Alexander stood there, his expression unreadable.
“What are you doing with those documents?” he asked.
Evelyn’s heart pounded.
He knew.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Alexander closed the door behind him and lowered his voice.
“Listen carefully, Evelyn. If my mother discovers what you’ve seen, she will make certain you never leave this family.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Why are you warning me?”
His jaw tightened.
“Because I suspect the woman I was forced to marry may be the only person who can help me stop them.”
For the first time since the wedding, Evelyn realized that Alexander might not be her greatest enemy.
He might be another prisoner of the same family.
She stepped closer, her fear slowly giving way to determination.
“Then tell me everything,” she said. “And don’t expect me to trust you simply because we share a marriage certificate.”
Alexander studied her for a long moment before answering.
“Fair enough. But if we do this, there’s no turning back.”
Evelyn glanced at the hidden folder beneath her pillow.
She had entered the Blackwood mansion to save her sister.
Now she had discovered a conspiracy that could destroy an entire empire.
And if the Blackwoods believed their unwanted bride would remain silent, they had made their first—and perhaps fatal—mistake.
Evelyn Carter was no longer merely a substitute bride.
She was about to become the Blackwood family’s worst nightmare.
