Idaho Family of Four Dies After Teen Daughter Allegedly Falls Asleep at the Wheel and Drives Off a Cliff

A family’s journey to visit an ailing relative ended in tragedy when a vehicle carrying a father and his three children plunged off a cliff into Idaho’s Salmon River. Authorities believed the teenage daughter driving the car may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to a crash that claimed all four lives.

The incident happened in June 2023 on a winding road north of Riggins, Idaho. Calvin Miller, 36, was traveling with his children, Dakota, 17, Jack, 10, and Delilah, 8. The family was making the journey to visit their grandfather, who was receiving hospice care.

According to reports citing police, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a large pile of rocks and went over a roughly 30-foot drop into the river below.

Investigators point to driver fatigue

Authorities said the family had been traveling a long distance, covering approximately 274 miles from their home in Spokane, Washington, toward Council, Idaho. Investigators believed fatigue may have caused Dakota to fall asleep while driving along the curving road.

The initial investigation indicated that the vehicle veered off the highway before striking the rocks and plunging into the river. Officials described the crash as a devastating accident, though the precise circumstances were based on the evidence available to investigators.

A journey meant to bring the family together

The family had been traveling to see their grandfather during a deeply difficult period. Instead, the trip ended in the loss of a father and his three children, leaving relatives and loved ones to grieve an unimaginable tragedy.

The case also highlights the dangers of driving while exhausted. Fatigue can affect attention, reaction time and decision-making, making long journeys particularly risky when drivers do not get enough rest.

Investigators’ findings pointed to driver fatigue as a likely factor in the crash. The tragedy serves as a reminder that drivers should stop somewhere safe to rest if they become sleepy behind the wheel, rather than continuing when they struggle to stay alert.
