Husband Accused of Killing Pediatrician Wife and Setting Her Body on Fire While Their 7-Year-Old Daughter Slept

Pennsylvania Husband Accused of Strangling Pediatrician Wife and Setting Her Body on Fire While Their Daughter Slept

A Pennsylvania community has been left shaken after a 41-year-old pediatrician, Dr. Julia Pederson, was found dead following a fire at her family’s home in Harrisburg. Her husband, Jonathan Gatto, has been arrested and charged in connection with her death.

According to PEOPLE, emergency responders were called to the home on Green Street shortly after 7 a.m. on October 10, 2026, after receiving a report of a fire. Firefighters found Pederson unresponsive inside the house. She was taken to Penn State Health Holy Spirit Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators later determined that the fire had been deliberately set. According to court documents cited in the report, authorities also concluded that Pederson had died before the fire began.

Investigators allege the fire was intended to conceal a killing

A criminal complaint alleges that Gatto strangled his wife before setting her body on fire. An autopsy reportedly determined that Pederson died from strangulation.

Gatto allegedly told investigators that the couple’s marriage had been troubled and that they were discussing separation. According to the affidavit, he described hearing a noise inside the home the night before the fire and later said he had awakened when the smoke detectors sounded.

He reportedly told authorities that he went to his seven-year-old daughter’s bedroom, brought her outside and called 911. He also claimed that he tried to reach his wife inside the burning home but burned his hand while attempting to get to her.

Investigators examined these statements alongside the physical evidence gathered at the scene.

Their daughter was asleep upstairs

One of the most distressing details in the case is that the couple’s seven-year-old daughter was reportedly asleep upstairs when the alleged killing occurred. The child was physically unharmed, according to the report, but the circumstances surrounding her mother’s death have raised concerns about the emotional impact on her.

Neighbors expressed sadness for the family and concern for the child as details of the investigation emerged.

Husband faces multiple charges

Gatto has been charged with first-degree murder and other offenses, including arson-related charges, tampering with evidence, abuse of a corpse and endangering the welfare of a child, according to PEOPLE.

The allegations are serious, but criminal charges do not establish guilt. The case must proceed through the legal system, where the evidence will be examined and the allegations addressed.

Pederson’s death has left her family and community facing a devastating loss. As the case moves forward, investigators will continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
