Georgia School Shooting: Father of 14-Year-Old Suspect Arrested After Four People Killed

A deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on September 4, 2024, left two students and two teachers dead and renewed difficult questions about warning signs, firearm access and parental responsibility.
Authorities identified the suspect as Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student at the school. The victims were students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, and teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. Nine other people were hospitalized with injuries.
The teenager surrendered after school resource officers confronted him and was taken into custody. Prosecutors charged him with multiple counts of murder, and authorities said he would be prosecuted as an adult.
The investigation also examined earlier warnings. The FBI said it had received reports in 2023 about online threats to commit a school shooting. Local authorities interviewed Colt and his father, Colin Gray, at the time. According to the FBI, Colt denied making the threats, while his father said he had firearms at home but that his son did not have unsupervised access to them. Officials said the information available at the time did not establish probable cause for an arrest.

On September 5, authorities announced that Colin Gray had been arrested and charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children. Investigators alleged that he knowingly allowed his son access to a weapon. These charges concerned the father’s alleged conduct, separate from the charges against his son.
The case sparked a wider debate about how families, schools and law enforcement should respond when a young person is suspected of making threats. It also raised questions about firearm storage and the responsibilities of adults who own guns in homes with children.
The shooting devastated the Apalachee High School community, leaving families grieving and students facing the difficult process of returning to school after the violence. The legal proceedings that followed focused not only on the alleged shooter but also on whether others could be held accountable for decisions made before the attack.
