Florida Woman Faces Trial After Boyfriend’s Paralyzing Crash Ends in Tragedy
Florida Woman Faces Jury After Boyfriend Dies Months After High-Speed Crash

A Florida woman is standing trial in connection with a high-speed crash that left her boyfriend paralyzed and later led to his death, as prosecutors and defense lawyers offer sharply different accounts of what happened.
Leigha Mumby has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury in the death of Daniel Waterman, 22. The crash occurred on February 9, 2025, in Flagler County, Florida, after the couple left a Super Bowl gathering.
Prosecutors told jurors that the SUV was traveling at more than 100 mph before it veered off Interstate 95 and into the woods. They allege the crash followed an argument involving text messages from another woman. Vehicle data cited in court reportedly showed the SUV traveling at 94 mph in the final seconds before the collision.
Waterman suffered a broken neck that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He died on October 8, 2025, about eight months after the crash. Prosecutors say his death was directly related to the injuries he sustained.

The defense has challenged the prosecution’s interpretation, asking jurors to consider whether an unexpected event inside the vehicle caused the sudden turn. Mumby’s lawyer described the case as a tragedy and urged the jury to examine what happened rather than assume the crash was deliberate.
A judge also ruled that Waterman’s statements to investigators from his hospital bed could not be introduced at trial. In those statements, he reportedly accused Mumby of intentionally steering the SUV off the road after an argument. As a result, jurors will not hear his account as evidence.
The trial will examine the available evidence as jurors determine whether the charges against Mumby have been proven.
