Florida Cold Case: Man Accused in the 30-Year-Old Murder of 12-Year-Old Jennifer Odom

Florida Cold Case: Jeffrey Crum Accused in the 1993 Kidnapping and Murder of 12-Year-Old Jennifer Odom

A decades-old Florida murder investigation took a major turn in July 2023 when authorities announced charges against Jeffrey Norman Crum, a man already serving two life sentences for a separate violent crime.

Crum was accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and murdering 12-year-old Jennifer Odom, who disappeared after getting off her school bus in February 1993. The case had remained unsolved for 30 years, leaving Jennifer’s family waiting for answers.

On February 19, 1993, Jennifer got off the bus and began walking toward her home in Pasco County, Florida. Other children reportedly saw a faded blue pickup truck in the area as she walked. She never made it home.

Six days later, searchers discovered her body in a field in neighboring Hernando County. Investigators continued pursuing leads over the following decades, but the case remained unresolved for years.

A breakthrough came after DNA evidence from a separate sexual assault case helped investigators identify a potential link to Crum. Authorities said detectives had connected him to the earlier attack on a 17-year-old girl, who had also been abducted after leaving a school bus in 1992 and survived the assault.

Investigators said similarities between the two cases helped make Crum a suspect in Jennifer’s death. At the time of the 2023 announcement, he was already serving two life sentences for the separate case.

Authorities described Jennifer’s disappearance and death as a devastating loss for her family and community. Investigators also urged anyone with information about the case or other possible victims to contact law enforcement.

The arrest announcement brought renewed attention to a case that had haunted Jennifer’s loved ones for three decades. Although the charges marked a significant development, the allegations in the Jennifer Odom case must be distinguished from Crum’s existing convictions.
