13-Year-Old Tyler Phillips Dies After Jumping in Front of an SUV to Save His Sister

A 13-year-old boy from Long Island, New York, is being remembered for his courage after he was struck and killed by an SUV while trying to protect his sister from a moving vehicle.

Tyler Phillips and his sister, Randolph, were walking home in October 2022 when a speeding SUV struck the girl, according to reports. Witnesses said Tyler immediately rushed to help her, grabbing his sister in an apparent attempt to pull her to safety. The vehicle then struck Tyler before the driver fled the scene.

Tyler was later pronounced dead. His sister survived, and his family described his actions as a selfless effort to protect someone he loved.

“He saved my life,” Randolph said, reflecting on the brother she lost. Their mother, Desari Mac, also remembered Tyler as a hero, saying his actions would always be part of how the family remembered him.

Tyler had celebrated his 13th birthday just days before the tragedy. His school community, William Paca Middle School in Mastic Beach, expressed condolences to his family and friends.

Police sought information about the driver involved in the crash and announced a reward for tips that could help the investigation.

The loss devastated the family and the surrounding community. While Tyler’s life ended far too soon, his family’s memories of his final moments remain a powerful testament to the bond between siblings.
