THE WIFE WHO BOUGHT HIS COMPANY Part 2: The Woman Who Owned the Empire

THE WIFE WHO BOUGHT HIS COMPANY

Chapter 2: The Woman Who Owned the Empire

At exactly nine o’clock the following morning, Alexander Carter walked into the boardroom of Carter Global Holdings with a confident smile.

He wore a perfectly tailored navy suit, a silver watch, and the expression of a man who believed nothing in the world could threaten him.

Victoria Lane followed closely behind, carrying a leather folder.

“Good morning, everyone,” Alexander announced as he took his seat at the head of the long conference table. “Let’s make this quick. I have several important meetings today.”

The directors exchanged uneasy glances.

Alexander noticed but paid them little attention.

“What is it?” he asked impatiently. “Has someone discovered another problem with our quarterly numbers?”

“It’s not about the numbers,” replied Richard Bennett, the company’s senior legal adviser. “We have an important shareholder joining us today.”

Alexander leaned back in his chair.

“Another investor? Fine. Let them wait until I finish.”

“They’re already here.”

Before Alexander could respond, the double doors opened.

A woman entered wearing a white tailored suit, her dark hair gathered neatly behind her neck. She carried a slim black folder and walked with a calm confidence that made several directors rise from their seats.

Alexander barely glanced at her at first.

Then he froze.

“Natalie?”

His wife stood at the entrance, looking nothing like the woman who had watched him leave their penthouse the previous night.

There were no tears in her eyes. No hesitation in her steps. No trace of the helpless woman he had expected to find waiting for his divorce papers.

Instead, she looked at home.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded.

Natalie smiled politely.

“Good morning, Alexander. I believe this meeting concerns the future of Carter Global Holdings.”

A few directors exchanged surprised looks.

Victoria stepped forward, her lips curling into a mocking smile.

“I’m sorry, Natalie, but this is a private business meeting. You can’t simply walk in because you’re Alexander’s wife.”

Natalie turned toward her.

“Actually, Victoria, I won’t be his wife for much longer.”

Her gaze shifted to Richard Bennett.

“Please begin.”

Bennett opened a document and addressed the room.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce Mrs. Natalie Carter, the controlling shareholder of Carter Global Holdings, through her wholly owned investment company, Northbridge Capital.”

Silence fell over the boardroom.

Alexander stared at Bennett.

“That’s impossible.”

Bennett continued without reacting.

“Following the completion of several transactions this morning, Northbridge Capital holds fifty-two percent of the company’s voting shares. Mrs. Carter is its sole beneficial owner.”

Alexander shot to his feet.

“Fifty-two percent? Who authorized these transactions?”

“The shareholders who sold their shares,” Bennett answered calmly. “Every acquisition was conducted in accordance with the applicable regulations.”

Alexander turned toward Natalie, his face reddening.

“You did this?”

“Yes.”

“With what money?”

“My money.”

He let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh.

“Your money? You’ve never worked a day in your life!”

Natalie placed her folder on the table.

“You’re right about one thing. I never worked for you. I worked for myself.”

She opened the folder and slid a financial report toward him.

“For three years, I invested through Northbridge Capital. I studied companies you considered worthless, purchased shares when their prices collapsed, and helped several struggling businesses recover. Carter Global was only one part of my portfolio.”

Alexander glanced at the figures.

His expression changed as he recognized the scale of the transactions.

He had spent years boasting that nobody understood the market better than he did. Yet the woman he had dismissed as an ornament had quietly acquired control of his empire.

“How?” he whispered.

Natalie looked him straight in the eye.

“While you were busy telling people I had nothing to offer, I was learning everything you refused to teach me.”

Victoria grabbed Alexander’s arm.

“This has to be some kind of trick. We should challenge the acquisition immediately.”

Bennett closed his document.

“You’re welcome to review the transaction records with independent counsel. However, the transfers have been completed, and the voting rights are valid unless a competent authority determines otherwise.”

Alexander ignored him.

He stared at Natalie as though he were seeing her for the first time.

“What do you want?” he asked.

It was the question she had been waiting to hear.

“For now, I want the board to conduct a full independent audit of the company’s finances. I also want every executive compensation agreement reviewed, including yours.”

“You can’t remove me!” Alexander snapped. “I built this company!”

“You built it with the help of hundreds of employees, investors, and partners,” Natalie replied. “And now those people deserve to know whether the company has been managed responsibly.”

She turned toward the directors.

“As the controlling shareholder, I am requesting a formal vote on the appointment of an independent review committee. I also propose that all major financial transactions require committee approval until the audit is complete.”

One by one, the directors raised their hands.

The motion passed.

Alexander stood motionless, watching the people who had spent years obeying him turn toward Natalie.

For the first time in his professional life, he was no longer the most powerful person in the room.

Natalie gathered her papers.

“Mr. Carter, I expect your full cooperation.”

His jaw tightened.

“Don’t call me that. I’m your husband.”

“Not for much longer,” she replied. “And this is a boardroom, not our bedroom.”

She turned to leave.

“Natalie!”

She stopped at the door but did not look back.

“You can’t destroy five years of marriage over one argument,” Alexander said, his voice suddenly softer.

Natalie finally turned.

“One argument?”

Her eyes held his.

“You announced your affair to another woman while standing in our bedroom on our fifth anniversary. You told me I had nothing without you. You offered me a settlement as though I were a failed investment.”

She paused.

“Don’t pretend this began yesterday, Alexander. Yesterday was simply the day I stopped pretending.”

Then she walked out.

For several seconds, nobody in the boardroom spoke.

Victoria leaned close to Alexander and whispered, “We need to do something before she takes everything.”

Alexander looked at the closed doors.

“She won’t take everything,” he said coldly.

He had lost control of the company, but he still possessed something Natalie did not know about.

A secret buried in the company’s accounts.

And if he could find it before she did, he might yet turn the tables.
