Ohio Teen Mackenzie Shirilla Breaks Down in Court Before Receiving 15-to-Life Sentence

Mackenzie Shirilla was overcome with emotion in court in August 2023 as she learned her fate for a high-speed crash that killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and his friend, Davion Flanagan.

Shirilla was 17 at the time of the July 2022 crash in Strongsville, Ohio. Investigators found that she drove her Toyota Camry into a brick wall at approximately 100 mph, killing both young men. She survived the collision.

Prosecutors argued that Shirilla deliberately crashed the vehicle to end her relationship with Russo. Her defense maintained that a medical condition caused her to lose control of the car. After a non-jury trial, a judge found her guilty of four counts of murder and other charges.

During sentencing on August 21, 2023, Shirilla received a sentence of 15 years to life in prison. The judge ordered the two murder sentences to run concurrently, making her eligible for parole after 15 years.

The case drew widespread attention because of the victims’ young ages and the court’s conclusion that the crash was intentional rather than an accident. Family members of the victims addressed the court before sentencing, describing the devastating loss and its lasting impact.

Shirilla’s case has continued to attract attention through later reporting and documentary coverage, but the original sentencing took place in 2023.
