Oregon Father Crawled Through Shattered School Window to Stop Gunman, His Mother Reveals

A father whose two daughters attended an Oregon elementary school rushed toward danger when he heard gunshots, ultimately confronting a teenage gunman in an incident that left four people dead.

Kaylub Giamanco was heading home from his lunch break on October 15, 2026, when he heard gunfire near Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. According to his mother, Kenda Freeman, he saw 16-year-old Griffin J. John entering the school and decided to intervene.

Freeman told CBS News that her son followed the gunman toward the building and crawled through a window the teenager had shattered. Giamanco then encountered the attacker inside the school and fatally shot him, bringing the shooting to an end.

The tragedy claimed the lives of three students, ages 5, 8 and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were also critically injured, according to reports.

Police said a teacher had attempted to stop the gunman before Giamanco intervened. Authorities later praised the courage of those who acted to protect the children during the attack.

But while Giamanco’s actions have been widely praised, his family says he has struggled emotionally with what happened. In a conversation with his mother immediately after the incident, he reportedly expressed anguish that he had not been able to save everyone.

Freeman said she reassured her son that he had acted to protect others and had helped prevent further loss of life. His brother also told reporters that Giamanco was reluctant to speak publicly about the shooting because of the emotional toll it had taken on him.

The incident remains a painful tragedy for the school community, especially for the families who lost children and loved ones. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack and the teenager’s motive.

Giamanco’s story highlights the split-second decisions made by ordinary people during emergencies, while the grief left behind serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of school violence.
