Luigi Mangione’s Escape Route Revealed: How the UnitedHealthcare CEO Shooting Suspect Left New York

Investigators initially believed Luigi Mangione fled New York City by bus after the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. However, new details reported in December 2024 suggested that he may have taken a very different route out of the city.

According to Fox News, investigators came to believe that Mangione traveled by subway from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station to Penn Station in Manhattan, where he allegedly boarded a train bound for Pennsylvania. The revised account was based on reporting by CBS News and ABC News, which cited police sources.

Thompson, 50, was shot and killed outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024, as he was heading to an investor conference. The attack triggered a major investigation and a nationwide search for the suspect.

Authorities tracked the suspect’s movements through surveillance footage and other evidence. After leaving New York, Mangione was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Police said he was found carrying identification documents, including an allegedly fraudulent ID.

The change in investigators’ understanding of his escape route highlighted how surveillance footage and travel records helped piece together the events following the shooting. What initially appeared to be a straightforward departure by bus became a more complicated journey involving multiple forms of transportation.

Mangione faced criminal charges in connection with Thompson’s killing. The case drew widespread attention and sparked public debate about the American health insurance industry. However, the allegations and legal proceedings must be distinguished from broader public speculation about the motive.
