Parents Prepared Their Baby’s Funeral Before She Was Born — But Little Wren Defied the Odds

A Louisiana couple who once prepared to bury their newborn daughter are now celebrating precious milestones after their little girl survived an extraordinarily rare combination of congenital conditions.

Nick and Savannah Roberts were warned during pregnancy that their daughter, Wren Michelle Roberts, might not survive birth. Her medical complications were so severe that the family began preparing for a funeral.

But Wren’s arrival in September 2026 marked the beginning of an unexpected journey of survival.

A Devastating Discovery During Pregnancy

At approximately 20 weeks into Savannah’s pregnancy, medical testing revealed serious abnormalities affecting their unborn daughter.

Wren was diagnosed with heterotaxy syndrome, a congenital condition in which internal organs develop in unusual positions.

Her medical complications included a stomach positioned inside her chest, an absent spleen, spina bifida and multiple heart defects.

According to her specialist at Ochsner Children’s Hospital, doctors identified only 15 documented cases involving the same specific genetic mutation found in Wren.

A Funeral Planned Before Her First Breath

Faced with an extremely poor prognosis, Nick and Savannah began preparing themselves for the possibility of losing their daughter.

The couple even made funeral arrangements for the days following her expected birth.

However, Wren survived delivery, and doctors discovered an unusual feature of her heart that was helping sustain her circulation.

A blood vessel known as a major aortopulmonary collateral artery was functioning in a way that allowed blood to reach both her body and lungs.

Her medical team believes this unusual arrangement has played a crucial role in her survival.

Every Little Milestone Becomes a Celebration

Wren underwent spinal surgery when she was only one week old. She also requires feeding-tube support and ongoing specialized medical care.

Despite these challenges, her parents have celebrated moments they once feared they would never experience.

They have watched their daughter drink from a bottle, use a pacifier, cry and coo.

As she approached her first month of life, the family even brought her to church and a high school football game while taking precautions to protect her vulnerable immune system.

A Little Girl Inspiring Thousands

Nick and Savannah have documented their daughter’s journey through a Facebook community called Wren’s Warriors.

By early October, nearly 8,000 people were following the family’s updates and supporting them through Wren’s complicated medical journey.

Her doctors emphasize that she continues to face significant health challenges and will require extensive ongoing care.

Nevertheless, every milestone has become an opportunity for her family and medical team to celebrate.

For parents who once feared they would never bring their daughter home, these ordinary childhood moments have taken on extraordinary meaning.
