THE MOTHER-IN-LAW’S DEADLY GAME Part 1: A Bride Among Wolves

THE MOTHER-IN-LAW’S DEADLY GAME
Chapter 1: A Bride Among Wolves
The wind swept across the endless golden prairie, bending the tall grass beneath a darkening sky. Far beyond the rolling hills stood the Blackwood Estate, a magnificent mansion surrounded by vast ranchlands, guarded gates, and men who carried guns beneath their coats.
It was the heart of the Moretti family’s empire—a place where wealth was inherited, loyalty was purchased, and betrayal was often paid for in blood.
And now, Beatrice Blackwood belonged to it.
Three months earlier, she had married Adrian Moretti, the most feared mafia boss in the western territories. Their wedding had been the grandest event of the season, attended by wealthy ranch owners, powerful businessmen, and dangerous men whose smiles concealed their sins.
Beatrice had entered the marriage believing that love might soften even the darkest heart.
But she had underestimated one person.
Her mother-in-law, Eleanor Moretti.
“You look remarkably pleased with yourself, Beatrice,” Eleanor remarked one morning, standing in the doorway of the dining room. Her elegant black dress contrasted sharply with the pale gold sunlight pouring through the windows. “Tell me, does being the wife of a powerful man make you feel important?”
Beatrice slowly lowered her teacup.
“I married Adrian because I love him, not because of his family’s fortune.”
Eleanor laughed softly.
“How touching. Unfortunately, love means very little in this family. Money, power, and blood are what keep people alive.”
Before Beatrice could answer, Eleanor placed a small velvet box on the table.
“Perhaps you can explain this.”
Inside lay a collection of magnificent diamonds, including a necklace that had belonged to Adrian’s late grandmother.
Beatrice stared at it in confusion.
“What is this?”
“My missing jewelry,” Eleanor replied coldly. “The servants found it hidden in your dressing room.”
“That is impossible! I have never seen those diamonds before.”
“Of course you haven’t.” Eleanor leaned closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “A woman who marries into a family like ours must understand that nobody will believe her word over mine.”
At that moment, two armed guards entered the room.
Eleanor straightened her back.
“Search her belongings. And until we discover the truth, she is not to leave the estate.”
Beatrice rose from her chair, her heart pounding.
“You cannot imprison me in my own home!”
“This is not your home,” Eleanor snapped. “You are merely a guest who has stayed too long.”
The guards hesitated, uncertain whether to obey the woman who had married their boss or the woman who had controlled the family for decades.
Then a deep voice came from the hallway.
“What exactly is happening here?”
Adrian stood at the entrance, dressed in a dark suit, his expression unreadable.
Beatrice immediately turned toward him.
“Adrian, please. Your mother is accusing me of stealing her diamonds. I have never touched them.”
Eleanor sighed dramatically.
“My son, I never wanted to believe it either. But the evidence speaks for itself.”
Adrian examined the velvet box, then looked at his wife.
For one terrible moment, Beatrice saw doubt in his eyes.
“Everyone out,” he ordered.
When the guards had left, he approached her.
“Tell me the truth, Beatrice. Did you take them?”
Her face fell.
“You are asking me that?”
“I am asking because I need to know.”
She stared at the man she loved, struggling to hold back her tears.
“Then look into my eyes and ask yourself whether you truly believe I would betray you.”
Silence filled the room.
Finally, Adrian closed the velvet box.
“I will investigate this myself.”
It was not the reassurance she had hoped for, but it was enough to keep her standing.
As he left, Eleanor gave Beatrice a small, victorious smile.
The diamonds had been only the beginning.

Over the following weeks, the accusations multiplied. A servant claimed Beatrice had offered him money to steal confidential documents. Anonymous letters appeared on Adrian’s desk, suggesting that his wife had been meeting a rival ranch owner in secret. One evening, Eleanor even produced a photograph that supposedly showed Beatrice embracing another man beneath the moonlight.
Every accusation was carefully constructed.
Every piece of evidence seemed convincing.
And every time, Eleanor stood nearby, pretending to be the only person desperately trying to protect her son.
Yet Beatrice began to notice something strange.
Whenever a scandal erupted, Eleanor always seemed to know the details before anyone else.
One night, while searching for an old family document in the study, Beatrice discovered a hidden compartment beneath a desk drawer. Inside lay several letters, a ledger of unexplained payments, and a small recording device.
Curiosity overcame caution.
She pressed the play button.
A man’s voice crackled through the speaker.
“The shipment will cross the northern prairie on Friday. Adrian must not know until it’s too late.”
Then came Eleanor’s unmistakable reply.
“Do whatever is necessary. Once the rival family takes control of his operations, my son will have no choice but to surrender his inheritance. And when he falls, I will decide who deserves to rule.”
Beatrice froze.
A second voice asked, “And the bride?”
Eleanor laughed.
“The girl will be blamed for everything. By the time Adrian discovers the truth, he will have thrown her out himself.”
The recording ended.
For several seconds, Beatrice could not breathe.
Her mother-in-law was not merely trying to destroy her marriage. She was conspiring with the family’s enemies to bring down her own son.
Footsteps sounded outside the study.
Beatrice quickly hid the device beneath her shawl and slipped behind a heavy curtain.
The door opened.
Eleanor entered with a man Beatrice had never seen before.
“Everything must be settled before Adrian’s birthday celebration,” Eleanor whispered. “That woman is becoming a problem.”
“And if she has discovered something?” the stranger asked.
Eleanor’s expression turned murderous.
“Then she will not live long enough to tell anyone.”
Beatrice pressed a hand over her mouth.
She had entered the Moretti household as a bride, hoping to build a future with the man she loved.
Now she understood that she was trapped in a deadly game, surrounded by enemies wearing familiar faces.
But Eleanor had made one fatal mistake.
She had assumed that Beatrice was too innocent to fight back.
As the footsteps faded, Beatrice clutched the recording device and looked toward the moonlit prairie beyond the window.
Adrian’s birthday celebration was only days away.
And before the night ended, the entire Moretti family would learn that the quiet bride they had humiliated was no longer willing to remain silent.
This time, the trap would belong to her.
