The Mafia Queen’s Greatest Mistake Part 1: The Daughter-in-Law She Despised

The Mafia Queen’s Greatest Mistake
Chapter 1: The Daughter-in-Law She Despised
The first time Victoria Moretti humiliated her daughter-in-law in front of the servants, Isabella said nothing.
The second time, she lowered her eyes and endured it.
But after six months of marriage, Isabella had learned one painful truth: in the Moretti mansion, silence was mistaken for weakness.
And her mother-in-law was determined to break her.
“Isabella, have you forgotten how to pour tea?” Victoria’s sharp voice echoed through the grand dining room. “Or is your family so accustomed to making money legally that no one ever taught you how to serve people properly?”
Two maids standing nearby exchanged nervous glances.
Isabella carefully placed the teapot on the silver tray.
“I’m sorry, Mother. I’ll be more careful.”
Victoria gave a cold laugh. Dressed in an elegant black gown, with diamonds glittering around her neck, she looked every inch the queen of the Moretti crime empire.
“Your apologies are becoming tiresome. You married my son, but that doesn’t mean you belong here.”
Isabella tightened her fingers around the tray.
She came from the Bennett family, whose banking and investment businesses had operated legally for three generations. They had wealth, reputation, and influence, but no criminal empire, no armed men guarding their gates, and no bloody history whispered about in the newspapers.
To Victoria, that made Isabella worthless.
Her son, Alessandro Moretti, was the heir to one of the most feared mafia families in the country. He was handsome, ruthless in business, and powerful enough to make even his enemies think twice before speaking his name.
Yet he had chosen Isabella.
And Victoria had never forgiven her for it.
“Tonight is my wedding anniversary,” Victoria announced, adjusting the diamond bracelet on her wrist. “Important people will attend. I expect everything to be perfect.”
“Of course,” Isabella replied.
“Good. You will personally oversee the dinner service. Check the wine, arrange the dishes, and make sure every guest has what they need.”
Isabella hesitated.
“Mother, am I expected to supervise the staff?”
Victoria stepped closer, lowering her voice just enough to make the insult more personal.
“No, darling. You will serve the guests yourself. If you want to call yourself a Moretti, perhaps you should learn what it means to be useful.”
The maids lowered their heads.
Isabella felt the familiar sting of humiliation, but she refused to let Victoria see her tears.
“As you wish.”
Victoria smiled triumphantly.
“That’s a good girl.”
She turned away, unaware that Isabella’s quiet obedience was not fear. It was patience.
And patience, when pushed too far, could become something far more dangerous.
That evening, the Moretti mansion glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Luxury cars lined the driveway as politicians, business tycoons, and powerful underworld figures arrived to celebrate Victoria and her husband’s thirty-fifth wedding anniversary.
Isabella stood near the dining room entrance in a simple champagne-colored gown. Though elegant, it was far less extravagant than the dresses worn by the other women.
Victoria had insisted she wear it.
“A daughter-in-law should never outshine her elders,” she had declared that afternoon.
When the guests took their seats, Victoria raised her glass.
“Tonight, we celebrate loyalty, family, and the legacy my husband and I have built.”
Applause filled the room.
Alessandro sat beside Isabella, looking distracted as he answered messages on his phone. For months, business conflicts had kept him away from home, and he had failed to notice the growing tension between his wife and mother.
“Alessandro,” Victoria said sweetly, “your wife has been kind enough to help with the service tonight.”
He looked up.
“Help with what?”
“Nothing important, darling. Isabella simply wants to make herself useful.”
Before he could ask another question, Victoria turned to her daughter-in-law.
“Isabella, the wine glasses at the far end are empty. Take care of them.”
A few guests glanced at one another.
Isabella rose without complaint, picked up the bottle, and began pouring wine.
Victoria watched with satisfaction.
“See?” she remarked to the woman beside her. “A little discipline does wonders for a girl who grew up without understanding our world.”
The woman gave an uncomfortable smile.
Alessandro frowned, but before he could speak, a distinguished man in his late sixties suddenly pushed back his chair.
It was Richard Hamilton, chairman of Hamilton National Bank—the most powerful banking institution in the city.
Everyone knew him.
His bank financed major corporations, controlled billions in assets, and maintained relationships with some of the most influential families in the country.
Yet Richard wasn’t looking at Victoria.
He was staring at Isabella.
The wine bottle trembled slightly in her hand as she noticed him approaching.
“Miss Bennett?” he asked, his voice filled with disbelief.
Isabella turned.
“Mr. Hamilton. Good evening.”
Richard’s expression transformed into genuine admiration.

“Good evening? My dear, after what you did for my family, I should be the one standing here thanking you.”
The entire dining room fell silent.
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
Richard turned toward the other guests.
“Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the woman who saved Hamilton National Bank from financial collapse last year. When every major investor abandoned us, Isabella Bennett was the only person who recognized the truth behind the fraudulent acquisition threatening our institution.”
Whispers erupted around the table.
“She negotiated the emergency restructuring herself,” Richard continued. “She protected thousands of employees and prevented our clients from losing their savings. Without her intervention, my family’s life’s work would have been destroyed.”
He gently took the wine bottle from Isabella’s hand and placed it on the table.
Then, to the astonishment of everyone present, the chairman bowed his head respectfully.
“I owe you more than I can ever repay.”
Isabella offered him a modest smile.
“You’ve already repaid me, Mr. Hamilton. Your bank kept its promises to the families who depended on it. That’s what mattered.”
Richard shook his head.
“Your modesty is remarkable.”
Across the table, Victoria sat frozen.
The daughter-in-law she had mocked as a naive outsider was being honored by one of the most powerful men in the city.
And Victoria had just ordered that woman to serve wine like a servant.
Alessandro slowly rose from his chair.
His eyes moved from Richard to Isabella, then finally settled on his mother.
“Mother,” he said quietly, “what exactly did you mean when you said Isabella wanted to make herself useful?”
Victoria’s lips parted, but no words came out.
For the first time that evening, she looked uncertain.
Alessandro turned to his wife.
“Isabella, why didn’t you ever tell me about this?”
She held his gaze for a long moment.
“Would you have listened, Alessandro?”
The question struck harder than any accusation.
His expression darkened.
“What are you talking about?”
Isabella glanced at Victoria, who was now desperately avoiding her eyes.
“Perhaps you should ask your mother what happens when you’re not home.”
Alessandro’s face went cold.
He had faced rival mafia families without flinching. He had negotiated with men who would kill for a fraction of his fortune. Yet he had never imagined that the woman he loved might be suffering under his own roof.
He looked at the two maids standing beside the wall.
“Tell me the truth,” he ordered. “Has my wife been mistreated in this house?”
Neither maid answered immediately.
Victoria slammed her hand against the table.
“This is a private family matter! You will not embarrass me in front of our guests!”
But Alessandro didn’t even look at her.
“Answer me.”
One of the maids began to tremble.
“Sir… Mrs. Moretti has made Lady Isabella do the servants’ work almost every day. She has insulted her in front of us, taken away her household privileges, and forbidden us from helping her.”
The room fell deathly silent.
Alessandro stared at his mother as if he were seeing her for the first time.
“Is this true?”
Victoria lifted her chin.
“I was teaching her how to be a proper Moretti wife! She comes from a respectable but ordinary family. She knows nothing about loyalty, power, or the sacrifices required to stand beside a man like you.”
“And you thought humiliating her would teach her?”
“I am your mother!”
“And she is my wife!”
His voice thundered through the dining room.
Several guests flinched.
Alessandro stepped between Isabella and Victoria, his expression colder than anyone had ever seen.
“You have spent six months treating the woman I love like she has no value. Yet tonight, you discovered that she possesses more integrity and influence than you ever bothered to understand.”
Victoria’s face flushed with fury.
“Don’t you dare take her side against your own blood!”
Alessandro took Isabella’s hand.
“She is my family. And from this moment forward, no one in this house will disrespect her again.”
Isabella looked at him, searching his face for the sincerity she had wanted to see for months.
But before she could speak, Richard Hamilton cleared his throat.
“Mr. Moretti, there is something else you should know.”
Alessandro turned.
Richard’s expression had become serious.
“The financial investigation Isabella helped us uncover last year revealed suspicious transfers involving several companies connected to the Moretti family’s private investments.”
Victoria went pale.
Richard continued, looking directly at Alessandro.
“Isabella asked me to keep those findings confidential until I had undeniable evidence. I believe the time has come to show you what we discovered.”
He removed a sealed envelope from his jacket.
Inside were documents bearing the names of several companies—and one signature Alessandro recognized immediately.
His mother’s.
For the first time in his life, the future head of the Moretti empire felt the ground shifting beneath his feet.
Victoria stared at the envelope, her hands trembling.
Because she knew the truth.
The woman she had spent six months humiliating had not only saved a banking empire.
She might also be the only person capable of exposing the darkest secret in the Moretti family.
And if Alessandro discovered what his mother had done, no amount of power would be enough to protect her.
To be continued…
