Woman, 41, Thought She Had a Hernia — Then Doctors Revealed a Shocking Surprise

A 41-year-old woman went to her doctor worried about an unusual lump near her ribs, believing it might be a hernia. Instead, she discovered she was pregnant — and just hours later, she was giving birth to a baby boy she had no idea she was carrying.
Sammy Evans, who lives in Bournemouth, Dorset, England, welcomed her son Noah in September 2026 after experiencing what is known as a cryptic pregnancy, a rare situation in which a woman does not realize she is pregnant until very late in the pregnancy or even when labor begins.
According to PEOPLE, Evans had been feeling unusual for some time but could not explain what was happening. She had not had a period for months, yet she attributed the change to her age, weight loss and exercise routine. She had also undergone gastric band surgery two years earlier and lost approximately 140 pounds.
When Evans visited her general practitioner on September 14, doctors initially considered whether the lump could be a hernia. A pregnancy test was also performed. Although the first result appeared negative, a doctor noticed a faint line and advised her to take another test at home. That test came back positive.
Even then, Evans had no idea she might be close to giving birth.
She continued with her normal routine that evening, including attending her usual water aerobics class. But around 1 a.m., she began experiencing abdominal pain while sharing a bed with her 10-year-old son. At first, she thought the pain was menstrual cramps.
As the pain intensified, she eventually went to the hospital. Doctors confirmed the pregnancy and performed a scan, which revealed that she was already in labor.
Evans recalled being shocked by the news. Because her first son had been delivered through an emergency cesarean section after induced labor, she did not know what natural labor pains felt like and struggled to recognize what was happening.
Her partner, Triston McKend, 38, was working in Spain when she discovered the pregnancy. By the time he arrived at the hospital, their newborn son had already been born.
Noah weighed 8 pounds and 1 ounce at birth and was reported to be healthy and full-term.

Evans also admitted that it took time to process the unexpected arrival. Initially, she struggled to believe that the baby was really hers, but she gradually adjusted to life as a new mother.
The couple had previously discussed not having any more children, making Noah’s arrival an even greater surprise for the family.
Although Evans’ experience may sound unbelievable, cryptic pregnancies are a recognized medical phenomenon. According to the Cleveland Clinic, approximately 1 in 2,500 pregnancies remain undetected until delivery.
For Evans, what began as a worrying medical symptom ended with an unexpected new member of the family — a baby whose arrival neither parent had planned for that day.
