Born Without a Nose, Tessa Evans Is Growing Up and Inspiring People Around the World

When Tessa Evans was born in Northern Ireland in February 2013, her parents, Gráinne and Nathan Evans, were confronted with an extraordinarily rare medical condition. Their daughter had been born without a nose, but they were determined to give her every opportunity to live a full and happy life.

Tessa has a condition known as congenital arhinia, a rare birth defect in which the nose fails to develop. Her case also involves eye abnormalities, and she has undergone several medical procedures since infancy.

As a newborn, Tessa spent five weeks in intensive care. Doctors also performed a tracheostomy to help her breathe safely, particularly while eating and sleeping.

Despite these early challenges, her family remained committed to supporting her development and helping her experience childhood as fully as possible.

A Groundbreaking Approach to Nasal Reconstruction

When Tessa was just two years old, she underwent a pioneering procedure in which doctors placed a custom-made implant beneath her skin to gradually create the shape of a nose.

The approach was intended to allow the surrounding skin to expand as she grew, potentially making later reconstruction less invasive. The process required continued medical monitoring, and further procedures were expected as she got older.

Her parents faced difficult decisions about treatment, balancing the potential benefits of reconstruction with the risks and challenges of repeated surgery. They also emphasized that Tessa was loved and valued exactly as she was.

A Childhood Filled With Personality

By the time Tessa turned 10 in 2023, she was enjoying many of the activities other children her age loved. She was interested in animals, music and trampolines, and she had a playful sense of humor.

Her family also shared moments from her life online to raise awareness of facial differences and encourage greater understanding of rare conditions.

In November 2023, Tessa appeared on Ireland’s Late Late Toy Show, where she met actress Alisha Weir, star of Matilda the Musical. The experience was especially meaningful for Tessa, who was a fan of the performer.

Her appearance offered a chance for viewers to see her as more than a medical story: she was a young girl with interests, dreams and a lively personality.

Looking Ahead

Tessa’s medical journey has involved ongoing treatment, and nasal reconstruction was expected to continue as she grew. Her story has drawn international attention not only because of the rarity of her condition, but also because of her family’s efforts to promote inclusion and understanding.

Her experience is a reminder that a rare medical condition does not define a child’s entire life. With family support and appropriate care, children like Tessa can pursue interests, form friendships and take part in experiences that matter to them.
