Baby Girl Born With a Giant Dark Birthmark Covering Much of Her Body — Then Doctors Discover Something Inside Her Brain
When Harmonie Sheahan welcomed her daughter Olivia into the world in May 2025, she immediately noticed something unusual about her newborn baby’s skin.
A large, dark birthmark covered much of the little girl’s body, stretching across her chest and back towards her knees. Smaller pigmented marks were also scattered across her face and skin.
But what initially appeared to be a visible skin condition would eventually lead to a far more frightening discovery.
A Birthmark Nobody Expected
Harmonie, from Auckland, New Zealand, had undergone routine prenatal testing and scans during her pregnancy, with no indication that her daughter would be born with such an extensive condition.
After Olivia, affectionately known as Livi, arrived, medical staff examined and photographed the unusual marks covering her body.
A dermatologist subsequently diagnosed her with giant congenital melanocytic naevus, a condition involving an unusually large pigmented birthmark present from birth.
For her parents, Harmonie and Jason, the diagnosis brought questions they had never imagined facing during their daughter’s first days of life.
Doctors Discover the Condition Goes Beyond Her Skin
Large congenital melanocytic naevi can sometimes be associated with neurocutaneous melanocytosis, a rare condition involving abnormal melanocytic cells within the central nervous system.
Further medical investigations revealed that Livi was affected by this serious complication.
The discovery meant that her condition was not simply a matter of visible birthmarks. Her brain also required specialist attention.
Her family suddenly faced a medical journey involving neurological monitoring and difficult treatment decisions.

Multiple Brain Surgeries Before Her First Birthday
As Livi’s medical challenges developed, she required repeated brain surgery.
Before reaching her first birthday, the little girl had already undergone multiple neurological operations and begun chemotherapy.
For Harmonie and Jason, the experience transformed what they had imagined would be their daughter’s first year.
Instead of focusing only on ordinary baby milestones, they were navigating hospital appointments, complex medical information and uncertainty about her future.
A Little Girl Who Still Finds Reasons to Smile
Despite the seriousness of her condition, Livi’s family continued to celebrate her personality and everyday moments.
Photographs shared with the family’s story show a smiling little girl whose life involves much more than medical treatment.
Her mother chose to speak publicly about their experience to help others understand that certain extensive congenital birthmarks can sometimes be associated with significant neurological complications.
The family also hoped that sharing Livi’s journey would bring greater awareness to an extremely uncommon condition.
More Than the Birthmark People See
Livi’s story is a reminder that an unusual birthmark can sometimes be the visible sign of a more complex medical diagnosis.
Her parents’ journey began with shock at her appearance and developed into a demanding period of specialist care, surgery and treatment.
As her family continues supporting her, the little girl remains at the centre of a story defined not only by a rare condition but also by the love surrounding her.
