My Husband Ordered Me to Kneel PART 3: The Woman Who Owned His Empire

PART 3: The Woman Who Owned His Empire
Thirty minutes later, I entered the headquarters of Moretti Industries.
Twelve board members stood around the conference table. At the far end, Mark’s business partner, Richard, looked as though he hadn’t slept in days.
When I walked in, everyone rose.
“Good morning, Ms. Bennett,” the chairman greeted me. “Congratulations on completing the acquisition.”
I took my seat.
“Thank you. Let’s begin.”
Richard cleared his throat.
“Before we discuss the company’s future, I believe we should address Mr. Moretti’s position.”
I slid a folder across the table.
Inside were financial records, evidence of unauthorized transfers, and documents showing that Mark had used company funds to pay personal expenses without the board’s approval.
Richard stared at the papers.
“Where did you get these?”
“An independent audit,” I answered. “It began before my wedding.”
I had suspected financial irregularities for months. I simply hadn’t wanted to believe my future husband was involved.
Now I had no reason to protect him from the truth.
The chairman adjusted his glasses.
“Given these findings, the board can vote to suspend Mr. Moretti’s executive authority pending an investigation.”
“Then let’s vote.”
The decision was unanimous.
Less than an hour later, Mark stormed into the boardroom.
“You can’t suspend me!” he shouted. “This is my company!”
The chairman remained calm.
“Not anymore, Mr. Moretti. The majority shareholder has approved the suspension.”
Mark turned toward me.
“You did this to me?”
I met his furious stare.
“No, Mark. I gave you every opportunity to be honest. You did this to yourself.”
He looked around the room, searching for someone willing to defend him.
Nobody moved.
Then he noticed the folder in front of me.
“What are those documents?”
“Evidence of financial misconduct. The auditors will determine the full extent of it.”
His face tightened.
“You’re my wife. You can’t destroy me like this!”
I slowly removed my wedding ring and placed it on the table.
“Yesterday, you promised to protect me. This morning, you ordered me to kneel. Now you’re asking me to protect you from the consequences of your own actions.”
My voice remained steady.
“You don’t get to use marriage as a shield when you never treated it as a partnership.”
For the first time, Mark had nothing to say.
I stood and gathered my papers.
“My attorney will contact you regarding the annulment or divorce proceedings, depending on what the law permits. Until then, please communicate through my legal team.”
As I reached the door, Mark spoke again, but his voice had changed.
“Claire, please. I love you.”
I stopped.

For one painful moment, I remembered the man who had once held me through the night when I was afraid of losing everything.
Then I remembered the rag at my feet.
“Maybe you loved the woman you thought you could control,” I said quietly. “But you never bothered to know the woman you married.”
I walked away.
That evening, Mark’s family began calling. Some apologized. Others insisted I should forgive him to preserve the family’s reputation.
I blocked every number.
I had spent three years believing love meant standing beside someone through every storm.
Now I understood something far more important.
Love should never require you to surrender your dignity.
And as I watched the city lights shimmer beyond my apartment windows, I knew my story wasn’t ending with a failed marriage.
It was beginning with the first decision I had made entirely for myself.
But just as I thought Mark was finally out of my life, an unknown number sent me a photograph.
It showed Mark standing outside a private clinic, holding the hand of a woman I had never seen before.
Beneath the photograph was a single sentence:
“Ask your husband why he needed a secret medical examination three days before your wedding.”
