His Biggest Mistake Part 2: The Truth Behind His Fortune

His Biggest Mistake
Part 2: The Truth Behind His Fortune
The entire ballroom fell silent as I descended the staircase.
Preston stared at me, his face drained of color. Victoria’s confident smile disappeared, and Margaret, who had just arrived beside the stage, nearly dropped her clutch.
“Evelyn?” Preston finally whispered. “What are you doing here?”
I stopped in front of him, smiling politely.
“Attending a charity gala. Is that so surprising?”
He glanced at my black evening gown, my diamond bracelet, and the security team standing behind me.
“Who gave you permission to wear that?”
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
I tilted my head.
“Permission? Preston, I’m your wife, not your employee.”
Before he could respond, the master of ceremonies approached me and bowed respectfully.
“Madam Chairwoman, the board is ready for your announcement.”
Preston froze.
“Madam Chairwoman?” he repeated.
I ignored him and stepped onto the stage.
The enormous screens behind me displayed the silver crest of Sterling Crown Holdings. Several prominent investors rose to their feet, applauding as I took the microphone.
“Good evening, everyone. For years, Sterling Crown Holdings has invested in businesses with promising futures. Unfortunately, financial success means very little when the leadership behind it lacks integrity.”
My eyes briefly met Preston’s.
He swallowed hard.
“Tonight, I would like to address our investment in Whitmore Technologies.”
A murmur swept through the ballroom.
Preston hurried toward the stage, attempting to interrupt me.
“Evelyn, we need to talk privately.”
Two security officers gently blocked his path.
I continued speaking.
“Seven years ago, Whitmore Technologies was struggling to survive. Sterling Crown Holdings provided the capital that allowed it to expand. We continued supporting the company because we believed in its potential.”
I paused.
“However, our recent review has revealed serious concerns regarding executive conduct, financial transparency, and the misuse of company resources.”
Preston’s face turned crimson.
“That is ridiculous!” he shouted. “I built that company myself!”
I looked directly at him.
“Then you shouldn’t have any trouble explaining why your company would have gone bankrupt without Sterling Crown’s funding.”
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Victoria grabbed Preston’s arm.
“Do something!” she hissed.
But for the first time, Preston had no answer.
I turned back to the audience.
“Effective immediately, Sterling Crown Holdings is suspending its planned expansion investment pending an independent investigation. We will also review all existing agreements and take appropriate action based on the findings.”
The announcement sent shock waves through the room.
Without the new investment, Whitmore Technologies’ ambitious expansion would grind to a halt.
Preston stumbled toward me again.
“You can’t do this to me!”
I lowered the microphone slightly.
“Actually, Preston, I can.”
His eyes widened as the realization finally struck him.
For seven years, he had believed himself to be the powerful one in our marriage.
He had never understood that the fortune he bragged about was built partly on my decisions.
Then Margaret rushed onto the stage.
“This is a misunderstanding!” she declared. “My son has worked incredibly hard. Surely we can resolve this privately.”
I turned toward her.
“Interesting. Seven years ago, when you told me I was beneath your family, you never asked who was paying your son’s bills.”
Her mouth fell open.
“And when you ordered me to clean broken plates this morning, you certainly didn’t seem concerned about misunderstandings.”
Several guests discreetly raised their phones.
Margaret’s cheeks burned with humiliation.
Preston stepped closer, his voice suddenly softer.
“Evelyn, sweetheart. Please. We can discuss this at home.”
I looked at the man who had once promised to love me forever.
“Home?”

I removed my wedding ring and placed it on the podium.
“You made it very clear tonight that you no longer consider me your equal.”
His expression crumbled.
“Don’t do this. I love you.”
For the first time that evening, I laughed without hiding my bitterness.
“No, Preston. You love what you believe I can give you.”
I walked past him toward the exit.
Behind me, the ballroom erupted into chaos as investors demanded explanations and reporters began calling their editors.
But before I reached the doors, my general counsel hurried toward me with a thick folder.
“Madam Chairwoman, there’s something else you need to see.”
His expression was unusually serious.
“What is it?”
He opened the folder.
“We found transfers from the company’s accounts to an offshore company controlled by Victoria Lane. The amounts are substantial, and several payments were authorized personally by Mr. Whitmore.”
I looked back across the ballroom.
Victoria was whispering urgently to Preston.
Suddenly, her affair seemed like the smallest part of their secret.
“Prepare the complete report,” I instructed. “I want every transaction investigated.”
My counsel nodded.
As I stepped outside, my phone vibrated.
A message from Preston appeared on the screen.
You will regret humiliating me. You have no idea what I’ve done for this company.
I stared at the message for a moment.
Then I replied with five words.
Neither do you, Preston.
Because tomorrow, I intended to discover exactly how far his arrogance had taken him.
And what I found would change everything.
