The Wife He Lost

PART 2: The Wife Who Disappeared

Vincent Moretti had never begged anyone for anything.

Yet that night, the most feared mafia boss in Chicago stood in his empty bedroom, calling his wife until his phone nearly slipped from his hand.

“Find Claire,” he ordered his men. “I want to know every place she’s been.”

Within an hour, his people searched hospitals, hotels, airports, and every address connected to Claire Bennett.

Nothing.

She had disappeared as if she had never existed.

Then Thomas entered the study carrying a small envelope.

“Madam left this behind, sir.”

Vincent snatched it from him.

Inside were her wedding ring, a signed divorce petition, and a short handwritten note.

I loved you enough to beg you to save my sister. You refused.

I hope you never have to experience the helplessness you made me feel.

Don’t look for me, Vincent. You have already lost me.

Vincent read the note three times.

Then he crushed it in his fist.

“Get me Sophia,” he demanded.

An hour later, Sophia arrived at the mansion wearing an elegant cream-colored dress. She looked concerned when she saw Vincent pacing beside the fireplace.

“What happened?”

“Did you know Emily died?”

Sophia’s expression changed.

“No. I thought Claire took her to another hospital.”

“She died three days ago.”

Silence filled the room.

For a moment, Sophia looked genuinely shocked. Then she reached for his hand.

“Vincent, you can’t blame yourself. You did what you thought was right.”

He slowly pulled his hand away.

“What I thought was right?”

His voice was frighteningly quiet.

“My wife begged me to help a dying child while I was arranging surgery for your daughter.”

Sophia’s eyes glistened.

“Lily needed you, too.”

“And Claire needed me.”

He stared at her, suddenly seeing the difference between the woman who always expected him to come running and the woman who had stopped asking.

For the first time, Vincent wondered how many times he had mistaken Claire’s patience for weakness.

But his regret came too late.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, I sat beside a window in a small coastal town in Maine, watching the rain fall against the glass.

My new doctor had confirmed that my pregnancy was progressing normally.

There was a tiny life inside me.

A life I would protect, even if I had to do it alone.

I placed a hand over my stomach.

“Your daddy made a terrible mistake, little one,” I whispered. “But you will never have to beg anyone to love you.”

My phone vibrated.

Vincent’s name appeared on the screen.

I watched it ring until the call ended.

Then a message arrived.

Claire, please tell me you’re safe. I know about the baby. Come home, and we’ll talk.

I closed my eyes.

For two years, I had dreamed of hearing him say he wanted a family with me.

Now, those words meant nothing.

I blocked his number.

And for the first time since marrying Vincent Moretti, I felt something close to peace.

I didn’t know that, at that very moment, he was making a promise that would change both our lives.

He would find me.

Even if it took him the rest of his life.
