The Wife He Took for Granted Part 3: The Secret Behind His Empire

Part 3: The Secret Behind His Empire
Three days later, my attorney called with news that changed everything.
“Claire, you need to come to my office immediately.”
When I arrived, she placed a stack of financial documents in front of me.
“We traced several transfers from your inheritance. Some were moved through shell companies before reaching an investment firm owned by Adrian’s family.”
My stomach tightened.
“How much?”
“Nearly eight million dollars.”
For several seconds, the room seemed to tilt around me.
Adrian had once promised that my father’s money would always remain mine.
Apparently, promises meant nothing when they stood between him and something he wanted.
But the worst discovery came from a separate document.
My signature appeared on an authorization form approving the transfers.
I stared at it.
“That isn’t my signature.”
My attorney nodded.
“We suspect forgery. We’ll need a forensic examination to establish that.”
I suddenly remembered the afternoon Adrian had brought me a stack of documents to sign. He’d kissed my forehead, told me they were routine financial updates, and hurried away to take a call from Sophia.
I hadn’t read every page.
I had trusted my husband.
And he had used that trust against me.
That evening, I received a message from an unknown number.
We need to talk. Alone. Please.
It was from Sophia.
I nearly deleted it.
Then another message arrived.
You deserve to know what Adrian has been hiding.
We met the following afternoon at a quiet café downtown.
Sophia arrived without her usual designer clothes or carefully arranged smile. She looked exhausted.
“I know you hate me,” she began.
“I don’t have the energy to hate you anymore.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted you to leave.”
“Then why did you keep taking everything that belonged to me?”
She lowered her gaze.

“Because Adrian always gave me what I asked for. And because I knew he would choose me whenever I made him choose.”
The admission was so shameless that I almost admired her honesty.
“Why are you here, Sophia?”
She slid a small envelope across the table.
“Because Adrian has been lying to both of us.”
Inside were copies of messages and financial records.
One message, sent by Adrian to his private accountant, made my blood run cold.
Keep Claire’s inheritance under the existing arrangement. She trusts me. She won’t question anything.
I read it twice.
Then I looked up.
“Why are you giving me this?”
Sophia swallowed.
“Because I asked him to marry me.”
I went completely still.
“What?”
She shook her head quickly.
“Not literally. I asked him to leave you and marry me instead. He promised he would eventually. He said your marriage was convenient, that he needed your family’s connections, and that you wouldn’t fight back if he decided to end things.”
The café noise seemed to fade.
Three years.
Three years of believing I had married a man who once loved me.
“Did he ever love me?” I asked quietly.
Sophia didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I closed the envelope and stood.
“Thank you for the documents.”
“Claire, wait. Can you ever forgive me?”
I looked at her for a long moment.
“That’s not something you get to ask me for today.”
Then I left.
That night, my attorney submitted the evidence to the appropriate authorities and filed an emergency motion to protect my remaining assets.
Adrian called shortly afterward.
I answered this time.
“What have you done?” he demanded.
His voice was furious, but beneath the anger, I heard something unfamiliar.
Fear.
“I protected what belongs to me.”
“You’re accusing me of stealing from my own wife?”
“You mean your former wife? And yes, Adrian. I’m asking the court to investigate the money you transferred without my permission.”
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
“I do. That’s why I’m leaving.”
He went silent.
Then his voice dropped.
“Claire, come home. We can settle this privately.”
I almost laughed.
When I had begged him to defend me, he had told me to stop being selfish.
When I had asked him to respect our marriage, he had chosen Sophia.
Now that his secrets were exposed, he suddenly wanted privacy.
“No,” I said. “You’ll speak to my attorney.”
“Claire—”
I ended the call.
Across Chicago, Adrian stood in his office, staring at his phone.
For the first time in his life, money, power, and fear were no longer enough to guarantee that he would get what he wanted.
And the woman he had dismissed as weak had just become the one person capable of threatening his empire.
But Adrian still didn’t know the most important thing.
My father had left me more than an inheritance.
He had left me controlling shares in a company that Adrian’s family desperately needed to keep their business empire alive.
And according to the agreement my father had signed years before his death, those shares could never be transferred without my approval.
The next morning, I received an invitation to an emergency shareholders’ meeting.
Adrian Moretti would be there.
So would every powerful man who had spent years believing I was nothing more than his obedient wife.
I put on a tailored black suit, gathered the documents my attorney had prepared, and looked at myself in the mirror.
For three years, I had entered rooms beside Adrian, allowing everyone to believe my only value came from being his wife.
Tomorrow, I would enter that room alone.
And this time, nobody would be deciding my worth for me.
