The Heir’s Revenge Part 2: The Secret in the Blood

The Heir’s Revenge

Part 2: The Secret in the Blood

The first thing I heard when I woke up was a steady beeping sound.

The second was a doctor saying, “Mrs. Vance, your baby is alive. But the next twenty-four hours will be critical.”

I burst into tears.

My baby was still fighting.

After emergency surgery and hours of uncertainty, the doctors managed to stabilize my condition. I lay in the hospital bed, exhausted, with an IV in my arm and a protective hand resting over my swollen stomach.

An investigator named Daniel Brooks stood beside the window.

“Your father-in-law has been formally detained,” he told me. “Your husband is being questioned. The evidence you provided has helped us uncover years of financial fraud, bribery, and money laundering.”

I nodded weakly.

“Will they go to prison?”

“If the charges are proven, yes.”

For the first time in years, I felt as though I could breathe.

Then Daniel hesitated.

“There’s something else you need to know. Before your father-in-law was taken away, he demanded to speak with you. He claims your unborn child has a legal connection to the Vance family that you may not fully understand.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel opened a folder and placed a document on my bedside table.

It was a copy of a private trust agreement signed by Arthur Vance several months before my pregnancy.

According to the document, Julian was not the sole beneficiary of the family fortune. The trust had been designed to protect the inheritance of Arthur’s first legitimate grandchild.

And there was a clause I had never seen before.

If Julian was convicted of a violent crime against his pregnant wife, his access to certain family assets would be suspended, pending a legal determination of the trust’s terms.

Arthur had known that clause existed.

That explained why he had looked so terrified when the agents arrived.

But the document contained another name.

Evelyn Vance.

Arthur’s late daughter.

My eyes widened.

Evelyn had died in a car accident fifteen years earlier. Julian had always told me she was irresponsible and had abandoned the family before her death.

But according to the records Daniel showed me, Evelyn had been investigating suspicious transactions inside the family company shortly before she died.

She had also left behind a sealed letter.

And the letter was addressed to me.

“Why me?” I whispered.

“We don’t know yet,” Daniel replied. “But we found it among the documents seized from Arthur’s private office.”

I stared at the envelope.

For years, I had believed I was merely an outsider trapped in a wealthy family.

Now I was beginning to suspect that someone had chosen me for a reason.

Before I could open the letter, my phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Clara, don’t trust Arthur. Don’t trust Julian. The truth about Evelyn’s death is closer to you than you think.

My fingers trembled.

Then another message arrived.

Ask your husband what happened the night he brought you home after your wedding.

I stared at the screen, struggling to understand.

My wedding night.

The memory returned in fragments: Julian leaving our reception early, a mysterious phone call, and his sudden insistence that I take a sleeping pill because I was exhausted.

The next morning, he had told me I had fainted.

I had never questioned him.

Now, for the first time, I wondered what he had been hiding.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“What is it?”

I handed him the phone.

He read the messages, his face hardening.

“Don’t respond. We’ll trace the number.”

I looked down at my stomach.

My child had survived Julian’s violence.

But if the messages were true, the danger surrounding my baby was far from over.

And somewhere behind the walls of the Vance mansion, someone knew a secret powerful enough to frighten a man who believed he owned everything.

I was determined to discover it.

Even if the truth destroyed the last memories I had of my marriage.
