Baby Girl Born With Five Organs Outside Her Abdomen Survives Life-Saving Surgery at Just Three Days Old
When Danielle and Hunter Wiebusch learned they were expecting a baby girl, they imagined the excitement of welcoming another child into their family.
But just ten weeks into the pregnancy, doctors discovered a serious complication that left them uncertain whether their daughter would survive.
Their baby, Hallie, was diagnosed with hydrops, a dangerous condition involving abnormal fluid accumulation in a developing fetus.
Further examinations revealed another extraordinary challenge: several of Hallie’s vital organs were developing outside her abdominal cavity.
A Rare Birth Defect Discovered Before Birth
Hallie had giant omphalocele, a congenital abdominal wall defect in which organs protrude through an opening near the umbilical cord while remaining enclosed within a protective membrane.
In Hallie’s case, the condition was particularly severe.
Her liver, intestines, stomach, colon and part of her bladder were located inside the external sac.
The abnormality created significant concerns about her breathing, heart function and ability to survive delivery.

A Family Preparing for an Uncertain Arrival
Danielle and Hunter faced months of medical uncertainty as specialists monitored their daughter’s development.
Because of the complexity of Hallie’s condition, the family arranged for her delivery at Children’s Minnesota in Minneapolis, nearly 600 miles from home.
Doctors carefully prepared for a complicated birth, knowing that the large external sac required special protection.
Born With Her Organs Outside Her Body
On April 25, 2023, Hallie entered the world through a specially planned cesarean delivery.
Unlike most newborns, she had a large membrane-covered sac protruding from her abdomen, containing several major organs.
Her medical team immediately began providing specialized neonatal care while preparing for the operation that could change her future.
A Life-Saving Operation at Three Days Old
At just three days old, Hallie underwent a complex surgical procedure lasting approximately three and a half hours.
Surgeons carefully returned the displaced organs to her abdominal cavity and reconstructed her abdominal wall and belly button.
The operation was successful, marking a major turning point in her family’s journey.
However, Hallie still faced a lengthy recovery before she could safely leave the hospital.
Finally Going Home After 124 Days
Hallie spent 124 days receiving hospital care before her parents were finally able to bring her home in August 2023.
After months of uncertainty, the family could begin experiencing everyday moments together outside the hospital.
In a later interview with PEOPLE, her parents shared that Hallie was continuing to make progress, including learning to eat.
Her medical team expected her to have the opportunity for a relatively normal childhood.
For Danielle and Hunter, Hallie’s journey represents the extraordinary progress possible through specialized neonatal care, complex pediatric surgery and continued family support.
