Little Girl Born With a Severe Facial Deformity Travels From Pakistan to Taiwan for Life-Changing Surgery
For five-year-old Bibi Laibi, growing up in Pakistan meant facing challenges that most children her age could never imagine.
Born with severe congenital craniofacial abnormalities, Bibi had an unusually large separation between her eyes, a complex facial cleft and a cleft palate.
Her facial differences were immediately visible, and her family struggled to find the specialized medical care she desperately needed.
But her mother’s determination would eventually take them thousands of miles from home.
A Childhood Marked by a Rare Facial Condition
Bibi’s congenital condition affected the development of several important facial structures.
Her eyes were positioned unusually far apart, while complex clefts affected the normal formation of her face and palate.
Beyond the medical difficulties, Bibi also experienced social exclusion and hurtful treatment from people in her community.
Despite these challenges, her family refused to abandon their search for help.
An Unexpected Opportunity in Taiwan
Through a referral from a local physician, Bibi’s family eventually connected with specialists at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan.
The hospital’s experienced craniofacial team agreed to evaluate her complicated condition.
For her mother, the opportunity represented renewed hope after years of uncertainty.
Doctors began developing a detailed surgical plan to address the abnormalities while protecting Bibi’s eyesight and other vital structures.
Two Complex Operations That Changed Her Life
On May 2 and May 30, Bibi underwent two major surgical procedures.
The medical team used advanced three-dimensional CT imaging and computer-assisted surgical navigation to carefully plan and perform the reconstruction.
Surgeons worked to correct the complex facial clefts and improve the alignment of her facial structures.
One of their most important achievements was successfully preserving her vision throughout the procedures.
The Emotional Moment Her Mother Saw the Results
Following the operations, Bibi’s appearance had changed significantly.
Her mother was overwhelmed when she saw her daughter’s progress.
Speaking at a hospital press conference, she expressed immense happiness and gratitude toward the medical professionals who had helped her little girl.
Bibi’s uncle was also moved to tears, saying the family would never forget the kindness they had received in Taiwan.
A Little Girl Finding Her Confidence
According to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Bibi gradually became more cheerful and comfortable interacting with others following treatment.
The once-frightened little girl even began expressing her gratitude to hospital staff in English.
Her treatment journey was not entirely finished, as another operation was planned for the following September.
Nevertheless, the results of her first two procedures represented a major turning point.
Bibi’s story demonstrates how international medical cooperation, specialized surgical expertise and a family’s determination can create new opportunities for children born with complex facial differences.
