THE COWBOY MARRIED THE TOWN’S MEANEST WOMAN—THEN DISCOVERED SHE CRIED EVERY NIGHT

PART 1: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR
Margaret Whitmore was the most feared woman in Red Willow.
She owned the town’s boardinghouse, insulted nearly everyone she met, and had driven away every man who tried to court her.
So when Caleb Turner, a gentle cowboy with a small ranch, announced he was marrying her, the whole town laughed.
“That woman will make your life miserable!” someone warned.
Caleb simply smiled.
“Maybe nobody ever asked why she’s so angry.”
Their wedding was simple. Margaret barely smiled, and that evening she gave Caleb three rules.
“Don’t touch my desk. Don’t ask about my family. And never enter the locked room upstairs.”
Caleb agreed.
But every night, he heard his wife crying.
On their third night, he found her sitting in the darkness, clutching a photograph.
“Margaret,” he asked softly, “who’s hurting you?”
“Nobody!” she snapped. “Mind your own business!”
The next morning, Caleb discovered a hidden envelope beneath a loose floorboard.
Inside was a photograph of a little girl.
Written on the back were six chilling words:
“She is still alive. For now.”
Another letter contained an even more frightening warning.
“Make your husband leave by Sunday, or you will never see the girl again.”
When Margaret returned home and saw the photograph in Caleb’s hand, she turned pale.
“Caleb… you shouldn’t have found that.”
Suddenly, three knocks sounded at the front door.
A stranger’s voice called from outside.
“Mrs. Turner? Sheriff Harlan sent me. It’s time we discussed your little sister.”
Margaret grabbed Caleb’s arm.
“Please,” she whispered, trembling. “Whatever happens next, don’t tell him we’re married.”
Then the stranger spoke again.
“And Caleb? We know you’re in there.”
