The Wife He Betrayed Part 3: The Woman From His Past

The Wife He Betrayed

Part 3: The Woman From His Past

I spent the entire afternoon trying to understand the message.

At six thirty, I arrived at the address Isabella had sent.

It was an abandoned restaurant near Chicago’s waterfront.

I brought no bodyguards, but I wasn’t foolish enough to go completely unprotected. Michael had arranged for someone to watch from a distance.

Inside, a woman in a dark coat sat near the window.

She looked older than she had in the photograph, but her eyes were unmistakable.

“Claire Bennett,” she said as I approached.

“Isabella Romano?”

She nodded.

“Thank you for coming.”

I remained standing.

“You mentioned a child. Explain.”

Isabella looked toward the window before answering.

“Five years ago, Adrian and I were engaged. But he was never in love with me. He was using the marriage to secure my father’s shipping empire.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

“Because I discovered Adrian was secretly working with my father’s enemies. I found documents proving he had arranged an attack that killed several people.”

She lowered her voice.

“I confronted him. He threatened to destroy my family if I exposed him.”

I folded my arms.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Everything. Shortly afterward, Adrian met you.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Are you suggesting he married me for business?”

“Not exactly.”

Isabella pulled a small envelope from her handbag.

Inside was a photograph of a little girl, approximately four years old, with dark brown hair and bright green eyes.

My breath caught.

There was something familiar about her face.

“Who is she?”

“Her name is Lily. She’s Adrian’s daughter.”

I stared at the photograph.

“That’s impossible.”

“Adrian had a relationship with another woman before you. When she died, he took responsibility for the child. But he never told you because Lily was connected to the same criminal investigation.”

My hands began trembling.

“Where is she now?”

Isabella leaned forward.

“She’s living under a different name with a woman who has been paid to keep her hidden.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because Adrian is about to lose control of everything. And Sophia has been helping him cover up what happened to Lily’s mother.”

Suddenly, the restaurant door opened.

I turned sharply.

Sophia Reynolds walked inside.

She looked at Isabella, then at me.

“Claire, you shouldn’t be here.”

I gave a bitter smile.

“That’s interesting. Everyone seems to know where I should be except me.”

Sophia approached our table.

“Adrian is coming. You need to leave.”

“Why? Is he afraid I’ll discover something else?”

Her expression softened.

“Claire, whatever you think happened between us, I never wanted to hurt you.”

I laughed quietly.

“You moved into a villa my husband purchased for you. I think we’re well past that conversation.”

Sophia lowered her eyes.

Then she whispered something that made my heart stop.

“Adrian didn’t buy that villa for me. He bought it because he was hiding someone there.”

Before I could ask who, headlights swept across the restaurant windows.

A black SUV stopped outside.

Sophia stepped backward.

“He’s here.”

The door opened, and Adrian entered with two security guards.

His eyes immediately found me.

“Claire.”

His voice was cold.

“What are you doing here?”

I stood, holding Lily’s photograph.

“Looking for answers.”

His gaze dropped to the picture.

For the first time since I had known him, Adrian Moretti looked genuinely terrified.

“Where did you get that?”

I lifted my chin.

“Who is Lily?”

He took one step toward me.

“Claire, put that photograph down.”

“No. Not until you tell me why you’ve been hiding a child from everyone.”

Sophia suddenly spoke.

“Adrian, she deserves to know.”

He turned toward her.

“Shut up, Sophia.”

The room fell silent.

I looked between them.

“You both knew. You both lied to me.”

Adrian rubbed his forehead, his anger giving way to something I couldn’t recognize.

“Lily is my daughter. Her mother died, and I was trying to protect her.”

“Protect her from whom?”

He didn’t answer.

Then Isabella stood.

“From himself, Claire.”

Adrian’s security guards immediately moved toward her.

But before they could reach her, my phone rang.

It was Michael.

I answered.

“Claire, listen carefully. I’ve just received the original documents from the company registered in your name. There’s evidence Adrian transferred millions through it.”

I closed my eyes.

“Can we prove he forged my signature?”

“Yes. But there’s something worse. The company was also used to purchase a property where a woman was held against her will.”

I slowly looked at Adrian.

“Who was the woman?”

Michael’s answer came quietly.

“Lily’s mother.”

The call ended.

I stared at my husband, suddenly understanding that the truth was far more dangerous than an affair.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Claire, come home with me. I’ll explain everything.”

I shook my head.

“You had five years to tell me the truth.”

His eyes hardened.

“I’m still your husband.”

I slipped my wedding ring from my purse and placed it on the table.

“Not for much longer.”

Then I walked toward the exit.

Behind me, Adrian shouted my name.

But this time, I didn’t stop.

Because now I knew one thing for certain.

My marriage had been built on lies.

And before I signed the final divorce papers, I was going to uncover every single one of them.
