The Man Who Stopped

PART 2 — THE NAME ON THE FILE

Three hours passed before a doctor came out.

Emily was sitting alone in the emergency waiting room, her fingers wrapped around a paper cup of untouched coffee.

Her mother’s condition was serious.

The doctors had discovered internal bleeding and a complication that required immediate surgery. They were stabilizing Margaret while preparing the operating room.

When the surgeon finally approached, Emily jumped to her feet.

“Is my mother going to survive?”

The doctor paused.

“She’s very sick, but we’ve managed to stabilize her. We’re doing everything we can.”

Emily covered her mouth.

“Can I see her?”

“Briefly, before surgery.”

She nodded, fighting another wave of tears.

As she turned toward the corridor, Daniel Whitmore appeared again.

He had removed his jacket and was speaking quietly with the hospital administrator.

When he noticed Emily, he excused himself.

“How is she?”

“They’re taking her into surgery.”

“Good. The hospital will handle the necessary treatment. You don’t need to worry about the deposit.”

Emily shook her head.

“I can’t accept that. I don’t even know you.”

Daniel studied her for a moment.

“Three years ago, did you attend nursing school at Indiana University?”

Emily blinked.

“Yes. I was one semester away from graduating. Why?”

“Your full name is Emily Rose Carter?”

“Yes.”

He looked away briefly, as if confirming something in his memory.

“Did you ever work at St. Vincent Medical Center during your training?”

Emily nodded slowly.

“I did. It was part of my clinical placement.”

Daniel’s expression became unusually serious.

“I thought so.”

“I’m sorry, but how do you know me?”

Before he could answer, a young hospital administrator approached carrying a tablet.

“Mr. Whitmore, we’ve located the information you requested.”

Daniel took the tablet.

Emily caught a glimpse of a document displayed on the screen.

It contained her mother’s name.

And beneath it was a second name she hadn’t seen in years.

Dr. Robert Whitmore.

Emily frowned.

“Who is that?”

Daniel slowly lowered the tablet.

“My father.”

Emily stared at him.

“What does your father have to do with my mother?”

Daniel took a breath.

“Twenty-six years ago, my father was the chief surgeon at St. Vincent. He treated a young woman named Margaret Carter after a serious accident.”

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“My mother never told me about that.”

“There’s something else.”

Daniel turned the tablet toward her.

Attached to the old medical record was a handwritten letter, yellowed with age.

At the bottom was her mother’s signature.

Emily recognized it immediately.

But the words above it made her blood run cold.

If anything happens to me, please make sure my daughter never learns what really happened that night.

Emily looked up at Daniel.

“What night?”

He was silent for several seconds.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Emily, I don’t think your mother was supposed to survive that accident. And according to my father’s records, someone paid a great deal of money to make sure the truth disappeared.”

Emily’s hands began trembling again.

Behind the operating-room doors, her mother was fighting for her life.

And suddenly, Emily realized that the woman who had raised her might have been carrying a secret for more than two decades.
