Red Baron Worker Breaks His Silence After Viral Prank — Thousands Rally Behind Father of Four

A Michigan delivery worker who became the focus of a viral social media controversy has publicly thanked the strangers who rallied behind him, after an online fundraiser raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for his family.
The man, identified online as Walt Z., works for Red Baron’s direct store delivery team. He attracted widespread attention after a video showed a prankster pretending to take $10 from him using a fake Apple Pay transaction sound while he was stocking frozen pizzas inside a grocery store.
The prankster approached Walt and asked him for the time. When Walt pulled out his phone, the person played the payment sound and claimed to have taken money from his account.
Walt initially appeared confused before becoming increasingly upset as the prank continued. He explained that he was already working late, his four children had gone to bed without him, and he was struggling to keep up with his mortgage payments.
“This is not a joke to me,” he told the prankster, making clear that the encounter was adding stress to an already difficult day.
The footage spread rapidly online, prompting criticism of the prank and an outpouring of support for the employee. Luke Oakenshield, an Arizona man who said he did not know Walt personally, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help provide financial security for him and his family.
Donations quickly climbed beyond the original fundraising target, reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars within days.
Walt eventually shared a message through the fundraiser, expressing gratitude to everyone who had donated, shared the campaign or sent encouraging messages.
“The kindness and encouragement you’ve shown me and my family have meant more than I can put into words,” he wrote.
He also reassured supporters that his family was doing well and asked people to respect their privacy as they adjusted to the sudden attention.
Walt acknowledged receiving numerous interview requests from news organizations. Although he said appearing in the spotlight was not something he would normally seek, he was considering sharing more of his experience if he could find an outlet that would treat his family respectfully.
The incident also prompted a public show of support from Red Baron. The company posted a message saying that Walt was still part of its team and had a fan club — including the company itself.

Red Baron’s parent company, Schwan’s, confirmed that the incident had taken place in August. It said the company had checked on Walt’s well-being, continued to offer support and was pleased that he remained a valued employee.
The account that originally posted the prank video was later deactivated, while the clip continued circulating across social media.
What began as an uncomfortable encounter at work has since turned into an extraordinary display of public generosity. For Walt, however, the most meaningful part of the response may be the messages reminding him and his family that they are not facing their difficulties alone.
