Florida Father Stabbed to Death in Front of Wife and Daughter After Facebook Car Sale Dispute

A routine attempt to sell a used car through Facebook Marketplace ended in a fatal attack inside a Florida family’s home. Months after the killing, the buyer has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Kenny Dale Ashby, 33, was killed on July 3 in Springfield, Florida, following a dispute over the title to a vehicle he had sold to Joseph Michael Lynch, 47.

According to prosecutors, Lynch had purchased a 2002 Dodge Neon from Ashby through Facebook Marketplace but had not received the vehicle’s title. Ashby reportedly promised to look for the paperwork, but Lynch became increasingly frustrated with the delay.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on July 3, Lynch returned to Ashby’s home on Ormond Avenue. Prosecutors said he kicked in the front door and attacked Ashby with two knives.

Ashby’s wife, their young daughter and three other adults were inside the home when the violence unfolded. Prosecutors said Lynch took the occupants’ cellphones before leaving the property, making it difficult for them to call for help.

Ashby was found suffering from multiple stab wounds and transported to Ascension Sacred Heart Bay hospital. He died during the early hours of July 4.

Lynch was arrested near the scene. According to reports citing police, he told officers, “I did it.”

Buyer sentenced to 40 years

On October 22, Lynch pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and burglary with assault or battery. Circuit Court Judge Brantley Clark sentenced him to 40 years in prison for each charge, with the terms running concurrently. He will therefore serve a total of 40 years.

Prosecutor Peter Overstreet described the killing as a senseless and violent attack. He also said Ashby’s family supported the plea agreement.

During the sentencing hearing, Ashby’s widow spoke about the lasting impact of losing her husband in front of her family.

“This loss has shattered this family completely; we have no sense of safety anymore, not even in our own home,” she told the court, describing the recurring trauma she continues to experience.

A statement written by Ashby’s daughter was also read during the hearing. She described the love her father had given her and the pain his death had brought to the family.

The case has left a young child growing up without her father and a family struggling with the memories of a violent attack inside their own home. What began as a disagreement over vehicle paperwork ended with a father dead and his loved ones facing a loss that cannot be undone.
