Footballer’s Girlfriend Left Alone at Hospital as His Father Breaks Down Watching Fatal Collision on TV

The family of Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel has been left devastated after the 30-year-old died following a horrific on-field collision, with new accounts revealing the heartbreak experienced by his girlfriend and father during the tragedy.

De Miguel, a forward for CD Tenerife, suffered a fatal collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a Spanish second-division match on November 2. His girlfriend, María, was at the stadium with their young daughter, Carla, when the incident happened.

According to Fernando Román, a close friend of the footballer, María spent hours alone at the hospital as De Miguel fought for his life. Román said he and his girlfriend remained in contact with her throughout the night, trying to offer support during an unbearable ordeal.

Speaking to Spanish television programme Vamos a Ver, Román described how deeply the tragedy had affected María. He also paid tribute to his friend, remembering him as a humble, hardworking man who brought happiness to those around him.

The couple had reportedly been making plans for a family trip to Disney with their children. Instead, María was left facing the sudden loss of her partner and the father of their little girl.

Meanwhile, De Miguel’s father witnessed the collision unfold on television while watching the match at a bar in the family’s hometown of Navahermosa, in Toledo.

A neighbour who spoke to Spanish programme Y ahora Sonsoles recalled the father’s reaction when he saw the impact. He said the man immediately began crying before gathering his family and preparing to travel to Tenerife.

The family rushed to the island after learning that De Miguel had been taken to hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, the footballer died on the morning of November 3.

The collision happened in stoppage time when Owono left his goal to challenge for a long ball. His knee appeared to strike De Miguel, who collapsed on the pitch. Medical staff treated him before he was transported to hospital. The match, which was tied 2-2, was abandoned.

De Miguel’s death has sent shockwaves through Spanish football. His club announced a period of mourning, while supporters and fellow players shared tributes to the striker.

His close friend Román also published an emotional message remembering their friendship, describing De Miguel as someone who had been there for him during difficult moments and whom he considered part of his family.

The tragedy has also prompted a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and the emergency medical response. However, no conclusion of criminal wrongdoing has been established.

For María, their young daughter and the rest of the family, the loss has turned an ordinary football match into a life-changing tragedy.
