Mother Feared Her Daughter’s Love of Flying Would Take Her Away — 20-Year-Old Pilot Dies in Florida Jet Crash

A mother’s deepest fear became reality when her 20-year-old daughter, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, was among nine people killed in a devastating private jet crash in Florida. The young co-pilot had dreamed of flying since childhood, but her final journey ended in tragedy just minutes after she reportedly sent a chilling message about the conditions surrounding the aircraft.
Nathalia was working as a co-pilot aboard a Learjet 60 that crashed near Greenacres in Palm Beach County on November 1, 2026. The aircraft had departed Austin, Texas, and was heading toward the Bahamas when it plunged into a residential area and burst into flames. All nine people aboard were killed.
Her mother, Camila Corteleti, said she had always feared that her daughter’s passion for aviation would eventually take her life. Despite those fears, she supported Nathalia as she pursued the career she loved.
“I wanted her to live her dream, but I knew that her dream was going to be the thing that would take her away from me,” Corteleti said.
Nathalia’s stepfather, Thiago Corteleti, revealed that she had sent a message to her boyfriend, who was also a pilot, approximately 10 minutes before the crash. The message reportedly read: “I’ve got turbulence, I’ve got ice.”
The young aviator had achieved an extraordinary milestone at an early age. She earned her pilot’s licence in 2023, when she was just 17 and still attending West Boca Raton Community High School. Her training was supported through the school’s aviation academy.
By the time of her death, she had reportedly accumulated more than 1,300 flight hours and was working for Upper Jets, a private charter company based in Fort Lauderdale. She had been flying commercially for around nine months and hoped to build a long-term career in aviation, eventually joining a major airline.
Her passion began when she was a child. Her father, Allan Filgueiras, was a recreational pilot who introduced her to flying. Her sister, Giulia, later recalled that aviation had always been her greatest dream.
In the final minutes before the disaster, the flight crew reported icing and moderate turbulence to air traffic controllers. They requested to climb to a higher altitude, but the situation rapidly deteriorated. Radio recordings captured an emergency declaration as the aircraft entered a steep descent.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are examining the wreckage, weather conditions and flight data to establish what caused the aircraft to crash. No final cause has been determined.

For Nathalia’s family, the loss is especially painful because they watched her work so hard to achieve the dream she had carried since childhood. She had earned her place in the cockpit at an age when many people are only beginning to consider their future careers.
She was only 20, but had already spent years building the life she wanted. Now, her family is left remembering a daughter and sister whose greatest passion became part of the tragedy that took her away.
