The Favor He Owed Me Part 3 – The Favor That Changed Everything

The Favor He Owed Me

Part 3 – The Favor That Changed Everything

I met Eleanor Moretti the following morning at a private residence outside Chicago.

She was seventy-eight, elegant, and still carried the authority of someone who had spent decades controlling one of Chicago’s most powerful families.

When I entered the sitting room, she immediately stood.

“Oh, Claire.”

She pulled me into a warm embrace.

For three years, Eleanor had been the only person in the Moretti family who treated me like a daughter rather than an outsider.

“Sit down, sweetheart.”

I noticed a thick folder on the coffee table.

“What is this?”

“Something I should have shown you a long time ago.”

She opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements, legal documents, and several photographs.

I recognized Sophia immediately.

But the photographs weren’t recent.

They showed Sophia meeting with Vincent’s uncle, Richard Moretti, outside a private club.

“What am I looking at?”

Eleanor sighed.

“Richard never wanted Vincent to marry you. He believed Vincent needed a wife from another powerful family. Someone whose connections would strengthen his position.”

“And Sophia?”

“She was supposed to be that woman.”

I frowned.

“But she left five years ago.”

“Yes. Because I paid her to leave. I thought I was protecting Vincent.”

Eleanor placed another document in front of me.

“This is the original agreement. Sophia accepted the money, but Richard secretly continued financing her lifestyle. He wanted her to return when Vincent was vulnerable enough to accept her.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he do that?”

“Because Sophia has been helping him undermine Vincent’s authority. She has been passing information about the family’s businesses to people who want to take control.”

I looked at the photographs again.

Suddenly, the terrified expression on Sophia’s face when she opened my red envelope made sense.

She hadn’t been afraid of losing Vincent.

She had been afraid of being exposed.

“Does Vincent know?”

“Not yet.”

Eleanor reached across the table and held my hand.

“He thinks Sophia is the woman who broke his heart. He doesn’t understand that she has returned for something much more dangerous.”

I sat quietly.

Then Eleanor said something that made my heart ache.

“Vincent loved you, Claire. He simply became so consumed by his own past that he failed to recognize what he had.”

I looked down.

“Love isn’t enough if someone refuses to show it.”

“I know.”

She squeezed my fingers.

“That’s why I won’t ask you to return to him.”

I was surprised.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing, sweetheart. I only wanted you to know the truth.”

Before I could respond, my phone began vibrating.

Vincent.

I stared at his name.

Then I answered.

“Hello?”

“Where are you?”

“At a friend’s house.”

“Claire, come to the mansion.”

“No.”

“Please. It’s important.”

I almost laughed.

“You seem to have a lot of important things to discuss with me lately.”

“Richard has disappeared. Sophia is missing too. Someone accessed our private accounts last night.”

I glanced at Eleanor.

Her expression turned serious.

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because the documents you gave Sophia are connected to this.”

“Vincent, I don’t want to be involved in your family problems.”

His voice softened.

“I know I don’t deserve to ask you for anything.”

Silence.

Then he continued.

“But I need you to trust me one more time.”

I closed my eyes.

Three years ago, those words would have been enough to make me run back into his arms.

Not anymore.

“I’m not coming back as your wife.”

“I understand.”

“And I won’t be part of your family business.”

“I understand that too.”

I hesitated.

Then I remembered the promise we had made at the dining table.

One favor.

No questions. No negotiations.

I had never expected to use it.

But perhaps the time had finally come.

“Vincent, remember our agreement?”

He went silent.

“The favor,” I continued. “You promised that one day, when I asked you for something, you would do it.”

“I remember.”

“Good. Then I’m asking you to do three things.”

“Anything.”

“First, stop Sophia from contacting me. Second, make sure nobody from your family follows me or interferes with my new life. And third…”

My voice trembled slightly.

“Promise me that whatever happens, you won’t use your power to take something from an innocent person.”

There was a long silence.

Then Vincent answered.

“I promise.”

I swallowed.

“That’s all I wanted.”

“Claire?”

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you one question?”

“What?”

“Why did you leave without telling me what was in that envelope?”

I looked at Eleanor.

Then at the folder on the table.

“Because I wanted you to discover the truth yourself. For once, I wanted you to see the woman standing beside you instead of the woman you were chasing.”

I ended the call.

Eleanor watched me carefully.

“Are you sure you don’t want him to know?”

I placed a protective hand over my stomach.

“Not yet.”

She followed my gaze.

Her eyes widened.

“Claire…”

I nodded slowly.

“I’m pregnant.”

For several seconds, Eleanor couldn’t speak.

Then tears filled her eyes.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

She reached for my hands.

“Does Vincent know?”

“No.”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“Then I hope he learns to become the man his child deserves.”

I smiled sadly.

“So do I.”

That evening, Vincent stood alone in his study.

Richard’s financial records lay scattered across his desk.

His security chief had just confirmed that Sophia had fled the city using a private jet arranged through one of Richard’s shell companies.

But Vincent wasn’t thinking about Sophia.

He was thinking about Claire.

He remembered the way she had stood in the mansion with two suitcases.

The way she had refused his money.

The way she had looked at him as if he were already a stranger.

His phone rang.

“Boss,” his security chief said. “We found something else.”

“What?”

“The original hospital records from six weeks ago. Someone accessed them using Mrs. Moretti’s name.”

Vincent slowly stood.

“Which hospital?”

The man gave him the name.

Vincent’s expression changed.

Six weeks ago.

The same week Claire had signed the divorce papers.

He stared at the report.

Then he noticed one line highlighted in yellow.

Positive pregnancy blood test.

For the first time in years, Chicago’s most feared Mafia Boss forgot how to breathe.

“Find Claire,” he whispered.

“Boss?”

Vincent gripped the edge of his desk.

“But don’t approach her. Don’t frighten her. I just need to know she’s safe.”

He looked at the empty wedding photograph frame on his desk.

And finally understood what he might have lost.

Not just his wife.

But the child he had never known existed.

Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, I was sitting beside an airplane window, watching the clouds drift beneath us.

My hand rested gently over my stomach.

“It’s just you and me now, sweetheart.”

I had no idea that Vincent had discovered my secret.

And I certainly didn’t know that, for the first time in his life, he was preparing to ask someone for forgiveness instead of demanding obedience.

But one thing was certain.

If Vincent Moretti wanted to become part of our child’s life, he would have to earn that right.

The favor he owed me had been fulfilled.

Now, for the first time, everything depended on the man he chose to become.
