The Day He Chose His Mistress

Part 2: The Empire Behind My Name

Dante stared at the divorce agreement as if I had placed a loaded gun on the table.

“Explain yourself, Amara.”

I adjusted Milo’s blanket.

“I believe the document explains everything.”

He turned toward Naomi.

“Leave us alone.”

Naomi didn’t move.

“She’s just given birth, Dante. You don’t get to order everyone around.”

His jaw tightened.

“She’s my wife.”

I looked up.

“Not for much longer.”

Before he could respond, Elias Mercer spoke through the phone.

“Mr. Valeri, I suggest you listen carefully. Your wife has authorized me to begin reviewing the financial structure of several companies connected to your legitimate business empire.”

Dante laughed coldly.

“My companies?”

“That’s where you’re mistaken,” Elias replied. “Some of those companies aren’t legally yours.”

Silence filled the hospital room.

Dante slowly turned toward me.

“What did he just say?”

I took a breath.

“Do you remember the first warehouse you bought in Brooklyn?”

“Of course.”

“Whose money secured it?”

He frowned.

“Mine.”

“No, Dante. It was mine. My inheritance from my father.”

I continued.

“The second warehouse was purchased through a company I established. The logistics contracts that helped you expand into three states were negotiated under my name. And the holding company that owns several of your most profitable commercial properties was originally funded by Bennett Capital.”

His expression darkened.

“Bennett Capital was a dormant company.”

“It was dormant because I never needed to use it.”

He stared at me.

For seven years, Dante had introduced me as his beautiful wife. At business dinners, he rarely mentioned that I had helped build the company.

He had forgotten that before becoming Mrs. Valeri, I had been a businesswoman with my own money, my own lawyers, and my own ambitions.

Elias continued.

“Mrs. Valeri is not asking for half of your empire, Mr. Valeri. She’s asking for the return of what legally belongs to her.”

Dante grabbed the divorce papers.

“You’re doing this because I missed one delivery?”

I almost smiled.

“One delivery?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You missed the birth of your son because you were sleeping beside another woman.”

His face hardened.

“Celeste is not part of this.”

“She became part of this three years ago.”

For the first time, Dante looked genuinely uncomfortable.

“Who told you?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

He stepped closer to the bed.

“Amara, listen to me. Whatever you think happened, we can fix it.”

I shook my head.

“You had seven years to fix it.”

His eyes moved toward Milo.

“At least let me hold my son.”

I hesitated, then nodded.

Naomi carefully placed Milo in his arms.

Dante looked down at the tiny boy.

For a moment, his expression softened.

“He’s a Valeri,” he whispered.

“No,” I replied quietly. “He’s Milo. And he deserves to be loved without having to earn your attention.”

Dante looked up sharply.

I reached for my phone.

“Your attorney can contact Elias. I don’t want to discuss this anymore.”

He stood there for several seconds before placing Milo back in Naomi’s arms.

Then he picked up his flowers and walked out.

But he didn’t leave without saying one last thing.

“You’re making a terrible mistake, Amara.”

I watched the door close.

“No, Dante. I already made it seven years ago.”

That afternoon, Elias sent me the documents.

And one particular page changed everything.

Bennett Capital owned 42 percent of Valeri Logistics Holdings.

Dante had never bothered to check the original shareholder agreement because he trusted me to manage the paperwork.

He had mistaken my loyalty for dependence.

He was about to learn the difference.

Two days later, Dante returned to our Manhattan penthouse.

I wasn’t there.

I had moved into my late father’s townhouse with Milo and Naomi.

On the kitchen counter, he found a small envelope.

Inside was my wedding ring.

There was also a handwritten note.

You once promised that I would never have to face anything alone.

You broke that promise on the day our son was born.

I am no longer waiting for you to become the man you promised to be.

—Amara.

He called me seventeen times.

I answered none of them.

Then he called Elias.

And that was when he discovered that the divorce was only the beginning.
