The Owner’s Seat Part 2 – The Empire Behind Her Name

The Owner’s Seat

Part 2 – The Empire Behind Her Name

By the time I reached the terminal exit, my phone had already received seventeen missed calls.

All of them were from Graham.

I ignored every one.

Outside, my driver, Thomas, was waiting beside a black Mercedes.

“Home, Mrs. Whitaker?”

“No. Take me to Whitaker Global.”

He opened the door without asking another question.

Twenty minutes later, I walked into the headquarters of the company my husband believed he owned.

The receptionist stood immediately.

“Good morning, Mrs. Whitaker.”

“Good morning, Sarah. Is the executive board still scheduled to meet at ten?”

“Yes, ma’am. Mr. Whitaker’s assistant called to say the meeting might be postponed.”

I smiled faintly.

“It won’t be.”

When I entered the private elevator, I received a message from my attorney, Jonathan Pierce.

The emergency review is complete. We have sufficient evidence to suspend Graham’s financial authority. There’s one more issue you need to see.

A document followed.

I opened it.

My stomach tightened.

Graham hadn’t simply transferred company money to Vanessa’s consulting firm.

He had been using the company as collateral for a series of private loans without the approval of the controlling shareholders.

Worse, he had falsified my electronic authorization.

He had apparently believed I would never examine the records.

I forwarded the document to Jonathan.

Prepare the suspension notice. And notify every board member that the controlling trust will exercise its voting rights today.

His response came immediately.

Understood.

At ten o’clock, I entered the boardroom.

Six familiar faces turned toward me.

Graham’s mother, Margaret, was sitting beside Richard. Vanessa was there too, wearing an expensive cream-colored dress.

She looked surprised to see me.

“Eleanor?” Margaret frowned. “What are you doing here?”

I placed my handbag on the table.

“Attending a board meeting.”

Vanessa gave a small laugh.

“Surely this is a misunderstanding. Graham said you were going home.”

I looked at her.

“Graham says many things.”

The door opened.

My husband walked in.

His tie was loosened, and his face was red with anger.

“What is she doing here?”

The chairman of the board, Mr. Harrison, cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Whitaker requested an emergency meeting. As the controlling beneficiary of the family trust, she has every right to attend.”

Graham stared at him.

“She’s my wife.”

“That doesn’t change the ownership structure,” Harrison replied.

I opened a folder.

“Let’s begin with the unauthorized transfers.”

I placed the first document on the table.

Then another.

And another.

Each showed money leaving Whitaker Global and entering Vanessa’s consulting company.

Margaret leaned forward.

“Those are legitimate business expenses.”

I slid a photograph across the table.

It showed Vanessa wearing a diamond necklace worth nearly half a million dollars.

The purchase had been billed to Whitaker Global.

“Is this also a business expense?” I asked.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

Graham grabbed the photograph.

“Those transactions were approved by me.”

“Exactly,” I replied. “And that’s the problem.”

I turned to the board.

“Under the company’s bylaws, the chairman cannot use corporate funds for undisclosed personal transactions or pledge company assets without the required authorization.”

Graham laughed bitterly.

“You’re not a financial expert, Eleanor. Leave this to people who understand business.”

I looked directly at him.

“Interesting. I was the one who negotiated the acquisition that saved this company nine years ago.”

Silence.

“I was also the one who arranged the original financing, negotiated with our largest investors, and established the family trust that owns the controlling shares.”

Richard slowly lowered his phone.

Graham’s expression changed.

“You never told anyone that.”

“I didn’t need to. I never wanted recognition for helping my husband.”

I paused.

“Unfortunately, I married a man who mistook my silence for incompetence.”

Jonathan entered carrying another folder.

He placed it in front of the board chairman.

“These are the formal documents suspending Mr. Whitaker’s financial authority pending an independent investigation.”

Graham stood abruptly.

“You cannot do this!”

Harrison examined the documents.

“Actually, she can.”

Vanessa rose from her chair.

“This is ridiculous! Graham built this company!”

I turned toward her.

“Then he should have been able to build it without stealing from it.”

Her face flushed.

Graham pointed at me.

“You’re destroying nine years of marriage over a few transactions?”

I held his gaze.

“No, Graham. You’re losing nine years of protection because you thought I would never stop giving it to you.”

Then I signed the final document.

The board chairman looked around the room.

“All in favor of suspending Mr. Whitaker’s executive authority?”

Five hands went up.

The sixth board member abstained.

Graham stared at them.

Nobody looked away.

And just like that, the man who had ordered me off my own private jet no longer had authority to enter his own executive office.

But the biggest surprise was still waiting.

Jonathan leaned toward me.

“There’s something else. We discovered a transfer scheduled for tomorrow morning. Seventy-two million dollars.”

I turned toward Graham.

His face had gone completely pale.

“Where was that money going?” I asked.

He said nothing.

Jonathan answered for him.

“An offshore account controlled by Richard Whitaker.”

I slowly turned toward Graham’s younger brother.

Richard looked down.

Margaret whispered, “Graham, tell me this isn’t true.”

For the first time that morning, I saw something more powerful than anger in my husband’s eyes.

Fear.

And I knew the family secrets were only beginning to surface.
