The Wife He Never Chose Part 3 – The Truth Behind Sophia’s Smile

The Wife He Never Chose

Part 3 – The Truth Behind Sophia’s Smile

Three weeks passed.

Claire settled into a beautiful lakeside apartment in Geneva, Switzerland.

Her lawyer had arranged everything carefully. She had a new phone number, a private doctor, and a comfortable home where nobody knew her as Vincent Moretti’s wife.

For the first time in years, she could sleep peacefully.

Her pregnancy was progressing well.

Every morning, she walked beside the lake, bought fresh flowers, and imagined the little life growing inside her.

Meanwhile, Chicago was falling apart.

Vincent had barely slept since Claire disappeared.

He had sent private investigators across Europe, contacted every airport, and offered an enormous reward for information.

But Claire’s lawyer had made sure nobody could reveal her location.

One afternoon, Vincent sat in his office when his security chief, Marco, entered carrying a thick folder.

“Boss, we found something.”

Vincent looked up immediately.

“Where is Claire?”

Marco hesitated.

“This isn’t about Mrs. Moretti. It’s about Sophia Carter.”

Vincent frowned.

“What about her?”

Marco placed the folder on his desk.

“We investigated her financial records. The money you’ve been sending her for the past two years hasn’t been used for Noah’s education.”

Vincent opened the folder.

Inside were bank transfers, property documents, and photographs.

Sophia had purchased a luxury condominium, expensive jewelry, and several designer handbags.

There were also payments to a private school, but the school had no record of Noah being enrolled.

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“Explain.”

Marco turned another page.

“There’s more. Noah’s biological father is alive. His name is Daniel Carter. He has been living in Boston for the past six years.”

Vincent slowly raised his eyes.

“What?”

“We contacted him. He confirmed that Sophia has been receiving financial support from you while telling him she couldn’t afford to let Noah visit him.”

Vincent stood up.

“Bring Sophia here. Now.”

An hour later, Sophia walked into his office wearing an elegant white dress.

“Vincent! I’ve been trying to reach you.”

He threw the folder onto the desk.

“Explain this.”

Sophia glanced at the documents.

Her smile disappeared.

“Where did you get those?”

“That’s your concern?”

She immediately began crying.

“Vincent, I can explain. I was desperate. I wanted to give Noah a better life.”

“You told me his school fees were overdue.”

“They were!”

“According to this, you never enrolled him.”

Sophia wiped her tears.

“I was afraid you’d stop helping us.”

Vincent stared at her.

Then he asked the question that had been haunting him.

“Did you know Claire was pregnant?”

Sophia froze.

Only for a second.

But Vincent noticed.

“Answer me.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

The room became completely silent.

Vincent felt something cold settle in his chest.

“You knew?”

Sophia began sobbing.

“I didn’t want to hurt her. I just thought…”

“You thought what?”

“I thought if she had a baby, everything between us would change. You would stop caring about me and Noah.”

Vincent grabbed the edge of his desk.

“Get out.”

“Vincent, please!”

“GET OUT OF MY OFFICE!”

Sophia stumbled backward.

For years, Vincent had believed he was helping someone who had once meant everything to him.

Now he understood that she had been using his kindness to destroy the only family he actually had.

But his biggest mistake wasn’t trusting Sophia.

It was failing to protect Claire from her.

That evening, Vincent returned to the mansion alone.

He entered their bedroom and found the drawer where Claire had kept her personal belongings.

Inside was a small envelope he had somehow overlooked.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

There was an ultrasound photograph.

On the back, Claire had written a single sentence:

I wanted you to be the first person to see our baby. I hope someday our child will understand why I had to leave.

Vincent sank onto the edge of the bed.

He pressed the photograph against his chest.

Then, for the first time in his life, the feared mafia boss began to cry.

Meanwhile, in Geneva, Claire sat inside a quiet examination room.

Her doctor smiled while showing her the screen.

“Everything looks wonderful, Mrs. Bennett. Your baby is growing beautifully.”

Claire smiled through tears.

“Can I see the heartbeat?”

The doctor turned up the volume.

A tiny, rapid rhythm filled the room.

Claire placed a hand over her mouth.

“Hello, sweetheart,” she whispered.

At that exact moment, her phone rang.

It was Daniel.

“Claire, I need to tell you something.”

“What happened?”

“Vincent has discovered the truth about Sophia. He’s been searching for you everywhere.”

Claire looked down at the ultrasound photograph.

“That isn’t my problem anymore.”

Daniel hesitated.

“There’s something else. He has learned about the baby, and he’s preparing to come to Switzerland.”

Claire’s smile slowly disappeared.

She had escaped Vincent’s mansion.

She had escaped his money, his power, and his expectations.

But she knew one thing about her husband.

Vincent Moretti had never accepted losing.

And this time, he wasn’t coming to beg for his wife.

He was coming for his child.
