Twelve Kazakh military personnel died after being swept out to sea during a naval training exercise in the western Mangistau region, authorities said on Thursday.

The servicemen were taking part in a combat drill when weather conditions suddenly deteriorated and strong winds developed, according to the regional government.

A total of 17 military personnel were swept away during the exercise. Three were rescued, while two others remained missing as search operations continued.

Authorities did not immediately provide further details about what caused the servicemen to be swept into the sea or the exact location of the incident.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared Friday a nationwide day of mourning following the deaths.

The incident occurred during a military exercise in the Mangistau region, which borders the Caspian Sea.
