5-Year-Old Theo Sabo Dies After Being Found Unresponsive in Family Vehicle During Baptism Gathering

A family celebration in Peoria, Arizona, ended in tragedy on September 13, 2026, after 5-year-old Theo Sabo was found unresponsive inside his family’s vehicle. His parents, Mihail and Anca Sabo, were later arrested and charged with negligent homicide and child abuse.

The Sabo family had returned home at about 1 p.m. after attending the baptism of another child at church. They then gathered with relatives and friends at their home to continue the celebration. According to police, Theo apparently remained inside the family vehicle while the gathering took place.

At approximately 3:46 p.m., family members realized Theo was missing and began searching for him. His mother eventually discovered the boy unresponsive inside the vehicle. Relatives pulled him from the car and began CPR before emergency responders arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The tragedy occurred during extreme heat in the Phoenix-area community. Weather records cited by authorities and news reports indicate temperatures were above 100°F that afternoon, with readings around 103–106°F reported in the area. Police have not publicly stated exactly how long Theo was inside the vehicle.

Investigators have described a possible misunderstanding within the family over who was responsible for bringing Theo inside. According to the family’s attorney and police accounts, Mihail told investigators that he had asked his 14-year-old son to take Theo out of the vehicle. The teenager reportedly told authorities that he did not remember being asked to do so. Police described the situation as a possible “miscommunication” between family members.

Mihail and Anca Sabo were subsequently arrested and charged with negligent homicide and child abuse. The charges are allegations and do not constitute convictions. During their September 14 court appearance, a judge found probable cause to continue the case and set bond at $150,000 for each parent. They were also ordered not to contact one another and were permitted only supervised visits with their other children.

The family’s attorney characterized Theo’s death as an unintentional tragedy and emphasized the parents’ actions after the boy was discovered. The attorney said Anca called 911, participated in CPR efforts and cooperated with investigators. The defense has argued that the circumstances reflected a tragic family misunderstanding rather than intentional wrongdoing.

The official medical cause and manner of Theo’s death had not been publicly released in the sources reviewed. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner was still listing the cause and manner as pending in the reporting available after the incident. The case remains ongoing as investigators and prosecutors continue examining what happened during those critical hours.
