Dog Missing for Five Years Reunited With Owner After Being Found 900 Miles Away

Kansas, USA — September 27, 2026

A dog that had been missing for more than five years has finally been reunited with her owner after being found hundreds of miles away, thanks to a microchip and the efforts of a small animal rescue group.

Lilly Disappeared in 2021

Courtney Short lost contact with her dog Lilly in August 2021 following a breakup with her former boyfriend, who took the dog with him.

Years passed without any news about Lilly. Courtney eventually moved to Boise, Idaho, but she continued to keep her contact information updated with the pet microchip database.

She had little reason to believe that the update would eventually help bring Lilly home.

Dog Found Hundreds of Miles Away

Lilly was eventually found as a stray in the Moab Desert area. She was later transported to Mound City, Kansas, where she was again taken in as a stray.

The rescue group, Dirt Road Rescue, decided to scan Lilly for a microchip. The check produced a match, giving rescuers a way to begin searching for her original owner.

Because Courtney had kept her information current despite moving several times, the rescue team was able to locate her.

Five Years Later, They Were Reunited

The discovery led to an emotional reunion between Courtney and Lilly after more than five years apart.

The rescue group helped arrange the meeting in Colorado. Courtney said there were tears when she finally saw Lilly again.

The distance between them had grown to roughly 900 miles, making the reunion even more unexpected.

A Reminder About Pet Microchips

Courtney said the experience showed why pet owners should keep their contact information updated whenever they move or change their phone number.

Without current information attached to Lilly’s microchip, the rescue group might not have been able to identify her owner after finding her so far from home.

For Courtney, a reunion that once seemed impossible finally happened after more than five years, proving that a lost pet can sometimes be found long after its disappearance.
