Ohio Doctor Sentenced After Using Estranged Wife’s Identity to Obtain Abortion Drugs
TOLEDO, Ohio — September 19, 2026

An Ohio doctor has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading no contest to four felony charges stemming from a case involving his estranged wife’s identity, prescription abortion medication and his pregnant girlfriend.

Hassan-James Abbas, 32, entered a no-contest plea in May to charges of disrupting public services, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, identity fraud and deception to obtain a dangerous drug. The Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office said the plea agreement allowed two other charges — abduction and tampering with evidence — to be dismissed at sentencing.

Prosecutors Say Abbas Used His Wife’s Information
According to the Ohio State Medical Board and prosecutors, Abbas separated from his wife in October 2024 and later began a relationship with a woman who was also his patient.

The woman told Abbas in December 2024 that she was pregnant and, according to the medical board’s records, said she did not want an abortion.

Prosecutors said Abbas subsequently used his estranged wife’s name, date of birth and driver’s license number without her consent to order abortion medication online.

The order included one 200-milligram mifepristone pill and 12 misoprostol tablets. The medication was delivered to Abbas’ home on December 11, 2024.

Alleged Attempt to Administer the Medication

According to the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, Abbas crushed the abortion medication into a powder. Prosecutors said that while the woman was asleep, he held her down and forced the crushed medication into her mouth.

The woman managed to break free and attempted to call 911. Prosecutors said Abbas took her phone and ended the call. She later left the home and went to a hospital for treatment.

The Ohio Medical Board’s records say Abbas acknowledged during a July 2025 interview that he had ordered the medication using his estranged wife’s personal information, crushed the pills and administered them to the woman. He disputed the circumstances of the administration, telling investigators that she had agreed to take the medication. He also acknowledged taking her phone and ending the 911 call.

Doctor’s Medical License Was Suspended
The State Medical Board of Ohio issued a summary suspension of Abbas’ medical license on November 5, 2025, stating that it had found clear and convincing evidence of violations and determined that his continued practice presented a danger of immediate and serious harm to the public.

Abbas was later indicted on six felony counts, including abduction, tampering with evidence, disrupting public services, unlawful distribution of an abortion-inducing drug, identity fraud and deception to obtain a dangerous drug.

Six-Month Jail Sentence
In May 2026, Abbas pleaded no contest to four of the charges as part of a plea agreement. The Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office said he faced a possible sentence of up to five years in prison and a $15,000 fine.

At his September 11 sentencing hearing, Judge Joseph McNamara sentenced Abbas to six months in jail followed by two years of community control.

During the hearing, Abbas’ attorney challenged aspects of the victim’s account, while prosecutors argued that Abbas had used his former wife’s identity to obtain the medication. The judge said the conflicting factual claims could have been tested at trial, but Abbas had chosen to resolve the case through a plea.

The sentence marks the latest development in a case that began with an investigation into the unauthorized acquisition and administration of prescription abortion medication.
