The wife behind the magic door

Vivienne Starfall thought she knew every secret inside the royal palace.
She knew its endless marble corridors.
Its enchanted gardens.
Its hidden libraries.
Its ancient towers.
And most importantly…
She believed she knew her husband.
Prince Alaric had promised her that she was the only woman he would ever love.
So when Vivienne followed him through a mysterious magical doorway beneath the palace, she expected to discover a secret passage.
She never expected to discover another wife.
Late one night, Vivienne noticed Alaric leaving their chambers.
Something about the way he moved felt strange.
He wasn’t going toward the royal wing.
He wasn’t heading toward the throne room.
Instead, he disappeared into an abandoned corridor beneath the palace.
Vivienne followed.
At the end of the corridor, she saw a glowing symbol carved into the wall.
Alaric placed his hand against it.
The stone opened.
A doorway appeared.
Vivienne stepped closer.
And followed him through.
The moment she crossed the threshold, she entered an entirely different world.
Thousands of golden lights floated through the air.
Silver trees stretched toward an enchanted sky.
Ancient towers rose from the mist.
And at the center of the hidden kingdom stood a breathtaking woman.
The Fairy Queen.
She had waist-length silver hair.
Luminous violet eyes.
And an elaborate emerald-and-gold gown covered in ancient magical symbols.
But Vivienne barely noticed any of that.
Because Alaric was holding her hand.
Vivienne froze.
Her heart seemed to stop.
“Who… is she?”
Alaric turned.
His face immediately lost its color.
“Vivienne…”
He stepped between them.
“You were never supposed to find this place.”
Vivienne stared at him.
“What is this?”
The Fairy Queen smiled.
It wasn’t a welcoming smile.
It was the smile of someone who had been waiting a very long time.
“She finally discovered she’s not my husband’s first wife.”
Vivienne’s face went pale.
“My husband’s… first wife?”
Alaric stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.”
But Vivienne couldn’t look away from the Fairy Queen.
“How long?”
Neither woman moved.
“How long have you been married to her?”
Alaric remained silent.
And that silence told Vivienne everything.
Then the palace began to shake.
Ancient symbols appeared across the walls.
Golden light spread beneath their feet.
A gigantic contract materialized in the air.
The parchment unfolded by itself.
Ancient writing covered every page.
Vivienne looked closer.
Then her blood ran cold.
Her own name was written beneath Alaric’s.
VIVIENNE STARFALL.
She looked at Alaric.
“What is this?”
He didn’t answer.
The parchment suddenly turned black.
A second line appeared.
ONLY ONE WIFE MAY SURVIVE.
The palace doors slammed shut.
The golden lights turned into dark flames.
And the peaceful hidden kingdom transformed into something terrifying.
Marble floors cracked apart.
Golden walls became black enchanted stone.
Magical weapons emerged from the darkness.
The Fairy Queen looked toward the contract.
Alaric shouted:
“Stop!”
But the magic didn’t obey.
“The contract is controlling the palace!”
A deep magical voice echoed through the chamber.
“Two wives cannot exist.”
The contract rose higher.
“One must die.”
Vivienne stared at Alaric.
“You knew.”
“I never wanted this.”
“But you knew.”
He had no answer.
The Fairy Queen slowly raised her hand.
Violet energy gathered around her fingers.
Vivienne stepped backward.
“Don’t.”
The Fairy Queen’s expression hardened.
“You took what was mine.”
A massive wave of violet magic exploded toward Vivienne.
She raised her royal pendant instinctively.
And suddenly—
A brilliant shield appeared around her.
The spell crashed against it.
BOOM.
The entire palace shook.
The Fairy Queen stared in disbelief.
Alaric looked at Vivienne.
“What…”
Vivienne looked down at her pendant.
She had never known it possessed such power.
The Fairy Queen lowered her hand.
For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.
Vivienne looked at Alaric.
“You didn’t choose me.”
“Vivienne—”
She turned toward the Fairy Queen.
“You chose us both.”
The contract began to shake.
Its golden letters flickered.
Then the parchment began burning.
Alaric’s eyes widened.
“No.”
Ancient symbols exploded across the walls.
The palace trembled violently.
The Fairy Queen stared at Vivienne.
“What did you do?”
Vivienne looked at the burning contract.
And finally understood.
The contract required her to accept the role it had given her.
The second wife.
The rival.
The sacrifice.
But Vivienne refused.
She slowly removed her wedding ring.
Then dropped it onto the magical floor.
“I choose neither of you.”
The Fairy Queen froze.
Alaric stared at her.
“You can’t.”
Vivienne looked directly into his eyes.
“You lied to me.”
Then she turned toward the Fairy Queen.
“You wanted me dead.”
She stepped backward.
“So why would I choose either of you?”
The contract erupted into flames.
A massive wave of white magic swept through the hidden kingdom.
Ancient towers cracked.
The magical weapons shattered.
The golden lights exploded into stars.
The enchanted throne split down the middle.
The entire palace began collapsing.
Alaric reached for Vivienne.
“Wait!”
But Vivienne kept walking.
For the first time, she wasn’t walking away because someone had betrayed her.
She was walking away because she had chosen herself.
The contract’s final page floated through the air.
The words had changed.
NO WIFE.
NO KING.
NO MASTER.
ONLY THE ONE WHO CHOOSES HERSELF.
Vivienne stared at the message.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Then she smiled.
The palace exploded into brilliant white light.
When the light disappeared, Vivienne stood beneath the night sky.
No crown.
No husband.
No magical contract.
But free.
Or so she thought.
Behind her, the Fairy Queen emerged from the ruins.
She wasn’t angry anymore.
She looked terrified.
Vivienne turned.
“You know something.”
The Fairy Queen said nothing.
“Tell me.”
The Fairy Queen looked toward the shattered palace.
“There was never supposed to be a second wife.”
Vivienne’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
The Fairy Queen whispered:
“Because the first wife was never meant to survive either.”
Vivienne froze.
The ground beneath her feet began glowing.
Ancient symbols appeared beneath the ruins.
Something was waking.
Something older than Alaric.
Older than the Fairy Queen.
Older than the kingdom itself.
The Fairy Queen took a step backward.
Vivienne stared at the glowing symbols.
“What is that?”
The Fairy Queen whispered:
“The reason the contract was created.”
Vivienne looked at her.
“And what is the reason?”
The Fairy Queen’s violet eyes filled with fear.
“You.”
Silence.
The ruins began to shake.
A massive golden symbol appeared beneath Vivienne.
Her royal pendant began glowing brighter than ever before.
And somewhere deep beneath the ancient palace…
Something opened its eyes.
Vivienne had entered the hidden kingdom believing she had discovered her husband’s secret.
But she had discovered something much bigger.
The contract had never been about choosing between two wives.
It had been about keeping one woman from discovering who she really was.
And now the contract was gone.
The secret was no longer contained.
Vivienne looked toward the burning ruins.
Her life as Alaric’s wife was over.
But her real story…
Had only just begun.
