AI Glasses Give Visually Impaired Farmer a New Sense of Independence
A visually impaired farmer in England has found a new way to handle everyday tasks after using AI-powered smart glasses that can read text, describe surroundings and help him find objects.
Dave Cragg, who runs a chicken-breeding business with his family in Wybunbury, Cheshire, began losing his sight when he was 10 years old. He now has very limited peripheral vision.
A Birthday Gift That Made a Difference
Cragg bought the smart glasses for his 65th birthday. One of the most meaningful moments came when he was able to use the technology to read a birthday card.
His daughter, Philippa Wilcox, said it was the first birthday she could remember when she had seen her father read a birthday card himself.
Reading and Understanding the World Around Him
The glasses use a built-in camera connected to applications on Cragg’s phone. They can read books, menus and other written information aloud.
The technology can also help him identify objects and understand what is around him. Through the Be My Eyes service, he can connect with volunteers who can describe his surroundings when he needs additional assistance.

Useful on the Farm
For Cragg, the technology is particularly useful because he continues to work on his family’s poultry farm. His daughter said the glasses give him more freedom to carry out small tasks that many people perform without thinking.
The technology also gives his family reassurance when he walks his dogs or works outdoors, because he has another way to obtain information about his surroundings.
More Than a Piece of Technology
Smart glasses have also raised questions about privacy because their cameras can potentially record people nearby. For Cragg, however, the devices have become an accessibility tool that helps him perform ordinary activities more independently.
His experience shows how technology originally designed for general consumers can also be adapted to support people with visual impairments in everyday life.
