THE MARRIAGE OF SHADOWS – Part 1 — The Man She Was Forced to Marry

THE MARRIAGE OF SHADOWS
Chapter 1 — The Man She Was Forced to Marry
The rain had been falling since midnight when Elena Vale learned that her family was about to lose everything.
The Vale family had owned businesses in the city for nearly forty years. Their name was engraved on the walls of hotels, restaurants, and office towers.
Now, all that remained was debt.
Her father, Adrian Vale, had died eight months earlier in what the police called a tragic car accident.
Elena had never believed it.
Her father had been careful. He never drove when he was exhausted, never drank before getting behind the wheel, and knew the mountain road where his car had crashed better than anyone.
Yet the official report said he had lost control.
And the last person seen arguing with him that night had been Damian Cross.
Damian was the heir to Cross Holdings, the most powerful business empire in the city.
He had been Adrian’s greatest competitor.
To Elena, that was enough.
Damian had destroyed one of her father’s largest contracts. Weeks later, Adrian was dead.
She had spent months hating him.
Then, on a cold Monday morning, Damian walked into the Vale mansion.
He wore a black suit, his expression calm and unreadable.
Elena stood at the top of the staircase.
“What are you doing here?”
Damian looked at her.
“Your family has seventy-two hours.”
“Seventy-two hours for what?”

“Before the banks begin selling your father’s properties.”
Elena’s face went pale.
Her uncle had hidden the truth from her. The family company was drowning in debt, and several creditors were preparing legal action.
Damian placed a document on the table.
“I can stop it.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“Of course you can. You finally get what you wanted.”
“I don’t want your company.”
“Then what do you want?”
Damian looked directly into her eyes.
“You.”
Silence filled the room.
Elena stared at him.
“You’re insane.”
“Marry me. The debt disappears. Your family’s properties remain yours.”
“Why?”
“I’ll explain after the wedding.”
She wanted to throw the document at him.
She wanted to refuse.
But that evening, she found her mother sitting alone in the dark, holding a photograph of Adrian.
“We have nowhere else to go,” her mother whispered.
Three days later, Elena walked down the aisle.
Her wedding dress felt like a prison.
At the altar stood the man she believed had destroyed her father.
Damian did not smile.
When he took her hand, his fingers were cold.
“I promise,” he whispered, so quietly that only she could hear, “I will never hurt you.”
Elena pulled her hand away.
“I don’t believe you.”
“I know.”
That night, after the wedding, Elena entered Damian’s study looking for the divorce papers she intended to demand.
Instead, she found something else.
A locked drawer.
It was slightly open.
Inside were photographs.
Her father’s car.
The mountain road.
A photograph of Adrian speaking with an unknown man.
And beneath them all was a thick folder marked:
ADRIAN VALE — DEATH INVESTIGATION
Elena froze.
Her husband had been investigating her father’s death.
She turned another page.
At the bottom was Damian’s handwritten note:
The accident was staged. Adrian Vale was murdered.
Elena’s heart stopped.
The man she had married might not have been her father’s enemy.
He might have been the only person trying to find his killer.
